Detroit (0-5) has had nearly two weeks of practice to get ready for the conference season as the red, white and blue last played 11 days ago at Bellarmine. The game will be the fifth road affair of the season for the Titans as they open the MAAC portion of their schedule for the second-straight season on the road.
Junior
Alex Maini leads the team with 16 points and is tied for the team high with 10 goals, while topping the team with six assists. His 3.2 points per game is third in the MAAC, while his 2.0 goals per game is tied for fifth. Seniors
Jamie Hebden and
Jordan Houtby rank 1-2 in the league in caused turnovers as Hebden's 2.4 per game is eighth in the nation, while Houtby's 2.2 is 10th. Both players are also tied for seventh in the MAAC with 3.6 GB's per game.
Detroit is 9-11 all-time in conference play since joining the MAAC in 2010. UDM opened its conference history with a 2-6 mark in 2010 and was 4-2 in 2011 and 3-3 last season, tying for second place in both years. UDM is also 9-12 all-time against current members of the MAAC - which includes conference tournament games - with two wins apiece over Canisius, Marist and VMI.
UDM is 2-1 in conference openers as well as 1-2 in conference road openers.
Marist is off to a strong start with four-straight wins to open the 2013 campaign and is currently receiving votes in the latest USILA Coaches Poll. The Red Foxes started the season with two home wins over Stony Brook (13-9) and Sacred Heart (15-12) and then went on the road to beat Lafayette (8-5) and Towson (10-9 in overtime).
Marist has three players in double digits in scoring, led by Jack Doherty's 11 goals and 14 points. Connor Rice - a preseason All-MAAC selection - is second on the squad with 12 points on five goals and a team-high seven assists, while Mike Begley has tallied 11 points on the strength of nine goals.
Matt Dugan has won 41-of-71 faceoffs and leads the team with 20 ground balls and Dave Scarcello has started and played every minute in goal, recording an 8.61 goals against average and a .539 save percentage.
The all-time series between Marist and Detroit has almost been dead even, take away a seven-goal outburst that the Red Foxes had in the second period in the first career meeting, a 13-6 loss in 2010.
Since then, UDM won two in a row, both by one goals as it ousted Marist in the MAAC Semifinals, 9-8, in 2011, and had an 8-7 overtime win at home last season, while Marist's other triumph was by one goal as well, 14-13, to end the 2011 regular season.
Detroit will be back at home next Saturday, Mar. 23, when UDM hosts VMI in a contest that is scheduled for Noon.
