DETROIT (3/2/2013) -- Senior
Yar Shayok posted a season-high 23 points and tied her career-high with 17 rebounds and sophomore
Shareta Brown tallied 15 points and 10 boards as the Detroit women's basketball team cruised to a 66-40 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon.
The win moved Detroit to 15-11 overall and 8-6 in the league, officially eliminating any possibility of UDM playing in the Horizon League Championship opening game. A loss by UIC tonight to Green Bay and the Titans would clinch a top-four finish, guaranteeing them a home game in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals on Mar. 13.
The 40 point allowed was the fewest to a Division I squad since the Titans defeated Loyola, 49-34, back in 2005. In 2010, Detroit crushed NAIA-member Marygrove, 68-27.
On a festive Senior Day, Shayok provided the offense early, finishing the first half with 17 points and going 11-of-15 from the field overall. Senior
Demeisha Fambro pitched in six points and five rebounds, while junior
Senee Shearer had eight points.
It was nothing but offense right from the start for the Titans as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead nearly four minutes into the contest. Milwaukee cut that to just three, 12-9, but a 10-0 Titan run jumped started a 23-6 spurt to end the half. The initial run gave UDM its first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 22-9, at the 8:06 mark. Shayok and Brown had four points in that stretch and the Detroit defense forced Milwaukee (8-18, 4-10 HL) into missing nine-straight shots.
The Panthers hit a three to end that, but a 13-3 charge followed as junior
Megan Hatter hit a trey and freshman
Rosanna Reynolds got inside for a layup. A 3-pointer from Shearer made it 30-12 with 3:30 remaining and after Milwaukee hit another triple, Shayok ended the opening stanza with a jumper and then her seventh career 3-pointer and the Titans led 35-15 at the break
UDM held Milwaukee to just 23.1% shooting (6-of-26) and outrebounded Panthers, 27-9, in the first 20 minutes of action.
The second half was much of the same as Detroit never let its lead slip under 18 and had a 22-point advantage, 49-27, midway through the period. Another Milwaukee three followed, but UDM would then never let the Panthers get that close again, raising the margin to as many as 28 before settling for the 26-point triumph.
Brown and freshman
Destiny Lavita-Stephens led the team with four assists apiece, while Reynolds had six points, five rebounds and three assists.
Detroit finished the game shooting 43.6% and with a dominating 51-26 effort on the glass.
Prior to the game, the Titans honored Fambro and Shayok along with their families on Senior Day. Fambro is currently 11th in UDM history with 96 three-pointers and has amassed 874 points and 341 rebounds, while Shayok is just the second Titan to record 1,000 career points and rebounds. Her 1,089 rebounds are second in school history and fourth all-time in the Horizon League, while her 1,150 points is 15th in the UDM record book.
Detroit will now get ready for Youngstown State on Thursday as the Titans welcome the Penguins into Calihan Hall for their final home game of the regular season. The game could go a long way to determining the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship.
