CINCINNATI (3/29/2013) --
Erin Campbell tallied four goals but the University of Detroit Mercy women's
lacrosse team fell by a 16-6 score to the Cincinnati Bearcats of the BIG EAST Friday evening at the new Sheakley Athletics Center.
Cincinnati (5-4) took an early 1-0 lead before Campbell scored her first of the day for Detroit (1-10) with 25:02 to play in the first half.
The Bearcats had six straight markers to close out the first half as the opening frame featured aggressive play and hard fouls called on both sides and ended with Cincinnati up by a 7-1 score.
30 seconds in the second half, UC added an eighth goal before Campbell's second of the day made it 8-2. Two more Bearcat goals made it 10-2 Cincinnati.
Detroit came back with two quick goals as Campbell netted her third and
Zaynib Hamze, on her birthday, scored her 18
th of the season to cut the lead to 10-4.
Another Bearcat goal would be added to the score sheet before
Kylie Birney registered her ninth goal of the season coming from the free position.
Five straight goals from Cincinnati put the game out of reach making it a 16-5 contest before Campbell scored her team-leading 19
th goal of the season taking a pass from
Tessa Keuler. Campbell now leads the team with 27 points and she has 15 goals and four assists over her last five games.
Detroit will play San Diego State University in Columbus, Ohio on the campus of Ohio State on Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
