JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (3/30/2013) -- Detroit fought all game long and sent the contest into overtime, but a Jacksonville goal two minutes into the extra period was the difference as UDM fell 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.
Sophomore
Mike Birney led the offense with two goals and two assists. Freshman
Nick Melucci added two goals and a helper and junior
Tom Masterson, sophomores
Scott Drummond and
Alex Wilson and freshman
Andy Hebden all found the back of the net.
Detroit (1-7, 1-2 MAAC) trailed 6-4 entering the fourth period, but Birney was able to run the offense finding Melucci to make it 6-5, and then Masterson to knot the score at 6-all with 7:13 left.
Jacksonville (5-3, 3-0 MAAC) then regained the lead, but Hebden was able to tie it again with 5:38 remaining. The Dolphins surged back in front a little more than a minute later, but Birney's second of the day tied it all up at 8-8 with 3:18 remaining.
Both teams had chances down the stretch, but Jacksonville was able to tally the winner off the stick of Conor Igoe at the 3:01 mark of the extra session.

A.J. Levell made 10 saves in net for UDM. Senior
Jordan Houtby picked up a team-high six ground balls and redshirt freshman
Damien Hicks was 9-of-18 in faceoffs with three ground balls.
Detroit fell behind quickly as Jacksonville tallied the first two goals of the game, but came back with Wilson's first collegiate goal at the end of the first followed by Melucci's first of the game to tie it at 2-2, early in the second.
Jacksonville regained the lead, 3-2, but the Titans then took a 4-3 advantage at the half as Birney and Drummond went back-to-back late in the period. The Dolphins then went on a 3-0 run in the third to open a 6-4 lead.
The Titans will be back in action next Saturday, April 6, when the red, white and blue host Manhattan on Titan Field. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m., in what will be a busy day on campus with a softball doubleheader and the 8th Annual Detroit-Oakland Track Dual following lacrosse.
