DETROIT (3/7/2013) -- Senior co-captains Zaynib Hamze and Megan Callahan each scored twice for Detroit but a Niagara goal with 1:03 left in regulation and two goals in overtime saw the Purple Eagles come away with a 9-7 victory over the Detroit women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon at Titan Field.
 
The game was tied 4-4 at the half and the Titans (1-5) took a 7-6 lead with 18:35 left in regulation on a goal from senior Lindsey Saunders. Niagara (1-5) then tied it up with just over a minute remaining in the second half and then posted two goals in the extra session to take the win.
 
It was the first overtime game in the history of the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse program which is now in its fifth year.
 
Senior Britany Busch scored her first goal of the season to start the Titan scoring and Michaela Schwartz tallied another for Detroit as sophomore goalie Lexie McCormick made 10 saves and grabbed a team-high six ground balls.
 
Niagara got on the board first 1:59 into the game, but Detroit came back as Busch had an unassisted goal at 26:22. Schwartz then scored her eighth goal of the season on a free position with 22:55 to play in the opening half that gave Detroit a 2-1 lead.
 
After the Purple Eagles tied it 2-2, Callahan had the first of her two with 21:18 left and Hamze netted her second just over a minute later for a 4-2 Titan lead. Niagara would come storming back with three straight goals to jump in front, 5-4, with 25:20 left in the game.
 
Hamze knotted it at five apiece and Callahan's second free-position tally of the game had the Titans up by a 6-5 margin with 22:11 remaining. Once again, the visitors from Western New York squared the game at 6-6 with 19:48 yet to play before Saunders gave the lead back to Detroit with her sixth of the season.
 
The Titans outshot Niagara, 33-25, but the Purple Eagles held a 23-19 advantage on ground balls and also won 13-of-20 draw controls. UDM turned the ball over 23 times, while forcing 18 Niagara miscues.
 
Detroit will be back in action next Wednesday at home as the Titans host Louisville at 2:00 p.m. The game is part of a Titan doubleheader as the UDM women's basketball team will have its Horizon League Quarterfinal game at 7:00 p.m.
