JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (4/14/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell 16-2 to the Jacksonville Dolphins from D.B. Milne Field in Atlantic Sun Conference action Sunday afternoon. It was the first conference loss in three games for Detroit in game that had a small lightning delay in the second half.
Jacksonville (10-4, 3-0 Atlantic Sun) tallied the first six goals of the game before
Erin Campbell scored her 27
th goal of the season for Detroit (3-12, 2-1 A-Sun) taking a pass from
Kylie Birney with 18:35 left in the first half.
Another four goals from Jacksonville and it was a 10-1 lead for the Dolphins. The score would remain the same until the break with the Dolphins holding a 24-4 shooting advantage and a 27-14 edge in ground balls while the Titans were only down by a 7-5 margin in draw controls.
In that first half of play,
Megan Callahan tied a first-half high with five ground balls and
Amanda Guthrie grabbed three.
In the second half, Jacksonville added six straight goals to make it 16-1 before Detroit added a late tally from Birney who recorded her 13
th goal of the season from the free position with 15 seconds remaining in regulation.
That would be how the game would end as the Dolphins outshot the Titans 39-10.
Callahan would finish with a game-high six ground balls along with four caused turnovers. Guthrie picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers while
Britany Busch added a pair of caused turnovers.
Morgan Miller also had four ground balls for Detroit.
Despite the loss, Titan goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made a career-high 19 saves playing the full 60 minutes.
Detroit will play its next contest on the road at St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. on Wednesday with game time set for 4:00 p.m.
