JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (4/26/2013) -- Senior midfielder Zaynib Hamze had a career-high eight points including seven goals as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team won 21-7 over the Stetson Hatters in the Atlantic Sun Conference Semifinals Friday afternoon. The Titans will now face the No. 1 seed Jacksonville on Sunday at 1pm in the A-Sun Championship with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line.
 
Detroit (5-13, 3-1 Atlantic Sun) entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and faced the No. 3 seed from Stetson (2-14, 2-2 A-Sun). The Titans had goals from eight different players in the win.
 
Hamze set one career-high with seven goals and another with eight points as she added an assist. She also became the school's all-time career leader in ground balls needing just one but tallying four to total 197 in her career to break the old mark set by Emily Boissonneault.

For the Titans, seniors Lindsey Saunders had a career-high with four goals and added an assist and Megan Callahan had three goals. Sophomore Tessa Keuler had two goals and four assists while junior Erin Campbell had two goals and an assist. Freshmen Michaela Schwartz had a goal and an assist. Kylie Birney added a tally, and Ivy Marshall completed Detroit's offense with the last goal of the day.
 
Saunders added six ground balls, Birney had six ground balls, and Hamze and Callahan each had five draw controls, while Hamze added four caused turnovers.  UDM sophomore goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made four saves in recording the Titan victory.
 
The first half started with an early UDM goal 59 seconds into the game. Birney started the Titan attack taking a pass from Keuler to make it 1-0 before a quick Stetson response tied the game 1-1. Hamze then went to work with two straight goals before the Hatters added one with 20:30 to play that made the score 3-2 Detroit.
 
Five straight Titan goals followed as Callahan started the UDM scoring run. Saunders then took a pass from Keuler for a goal and Keuler took her turn converting on a Hamze pass. Hamze came up with two more goals to put Detroit up 8-2.
 
The Hatters were not intent on going quietly as three of the next four goals came from opposing side. The UDM goal in the middle of the run came from Campbell off an assist from Schwartz which was Campbell's 12^th straight game with a goal for the Titans.
 
Up 9-5, Detroit scored four straight to close out the first half as Hamze, Campbell, Callahan, and Schwartz all found the back of the net to put the Titans up 13-5. Statistically, Detroit led 28-7 in shots, 20-10 in ground balls, 13-6 in draw controls, was a perfect 8-8 on clears, and was 4-7 on free position goals.
 
In the second half, the Titans outscored Stetson 8-2 netting the first three in a row. The first from Hamze nearly came on an open net for the first tally as she stole the ball from the Hatter goalkeeper who was well out of the net and even though the Stetson goalkeeper made it back into the net, Hamze still had the upper hand and recorded her sixth goal on the day. Saunders followed that with a goal and Keuler kept up with her 23^rd goal of the season.
 
A Hatter goal made it 16-6 but four straight Titan goals put Detroit above the 20 goal mark for the second straight game. Saunders netted the next two as both were assisted by Keuler and then Hamze added another one. Callahan completed her second career hat trick, her other one also came against Stetson, taking a pass from Campbell. 
 
UDM finished with a 42-12 shooting advantage, led 31-14 in ground balls, 19-11 in draw controls, and was 16-17 overall in clears.
 
The Titans will play Sunday at 1pm in the A-Sun Championship game vs. the No. 1 seed Jacksonville. The game will be played at Southern Oaks Stadium on the campus of Jacksonville University. It will be the first ever Atlantic Sun Championship and the winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
