Titans Competing Well In Canada

DETROIT (7/5/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team is highly represented in the Canadian summer leagues as seven Titans are competing at the junior and senior levels of box lacrosse.

2013 UDM graduate Jordan Houtby is currently playing on the senior level, while senior Tom Masterson, sophomore Ryan Callaghan and incoming freshman Marcus Butters, Lucas Ducharme, Pat Masterson and Kyle Pedwell are on the junior circuit.

Houtby is starting his post collegiate career for the Brooklin Redmen of the Major Series Lacrosse League. The MSL is one of the highest levels of competitive box lacrosse in Canada and the league champion will advance to September's Mann Cup, one of the most historic and treasured trophies in Canadian lacrosse.

The three-time MAAC LSM of the Year was drafted in the fourth round by Brooklin prior to the season. The defenseman has now seen action in 10 of the Redmen's 12 games helping the squad limit opponents to a MSL-best 92 goals and a 7-4-1 record (15 points) for third place, just six points away from the top of the standings with seven games left.

The Masterson brothers are playing for Kitchener-Waterloo of the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League and are trying to get the team to the playoffs. The Braves are currently holding the eighth and final spot of the postseason bid with two games left in the regular season.

The eldest Tom is fourth on the team with 36 points on nine goals and 27 assists. The 27 helpers are tied for second on the Braves and 24th in the league. He has had some big games with a season-high eight points on two goals and six assists against Brampton and a seven-point game with a goal and six helpers versus Barrie. Meanwhile, Pat has totaled nine points on two goals and seven assists from his defensive position.

Callaghan has done some damage for Junior A's Mississauga Tomahawks leading the team with 16 goals and ranking second in assists (16) and points (32). He has scored at least one point in every game and has twice posted a season-high four points and netted a season-best three goals with a helper against Brampton in early June.

Butters and Pedwell are also in Junior A with the St. Catharines Athletics. Pedwell is one of 10 players on the team in double digits in scoring with 10 points on six goals and four assists, while Butters has notched a goal and an assist.

Ducharme is suiting up for Windsor of the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League and helped the team to a Far West Division title with a 16-4 record. The Clippers earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming OJBLL playoffs as Ducharme finished the regular season fourth on the squad recording 59 points on 36 goals and 23 assists. His 36 markers were good for second on the Clippers and 17th in the league.

The Detroit men's lacrosse team won the MAAC Championship this past season – just its fifth as a Division I program – and made its first NCAA Championship appearance in school history nearly upsetting No. 2 Notre Dame in the first round.
