BUFFALO, N.Y. (10/18/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country had a strong finish to the regular season as three Titan harriers finished in the top 10 at the Canisius Alumni Classic, held on Saturday afternoon at Delaware Park.
Detroit took second place totaling 54 points in the 5k race on a cold, windy upstate New York brisk fall day. UDM also ran without one of its leaders as senior
Zeinab Baydoun did not make the trip due to her nursing major commitment.
Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf was back in first for the red, white and blue as the rookie was third in 19:06, four seconds away from her season low. It is the second time this season she has led the team as she was also the first Titan to cross the finish line in the season opener.
Freshman
Taylor Smith posted a new career low by one second in placing fifth in 19:14.3, while senior
Sara Taylor was literally just behind her, setting a PR by two seconds finishing sixth in 19:14.8.
Sophomore
Devon Sutton was 17th in 20:03 and freshman
Jenny Ponkowski recorded a 20:45 for 23rd. Sophomore
Samantha Zakalowski earned 24th in a time of 20:54 and freshman
Sydney Shaw was two seconds behind her placing 25th in 20:56.
Detroit will now have two weeks to get ready for defense of its crown as the Titans head to the Horizon League Championship on Nov. 1, held at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis. UDM won its first-ever cross country championship last season in Boardman, Ohio.
