DETROIT (5/18/2015) -- Head coach
Laura Maness and the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse program have inked seven prep standouts to National Letters of Intent. All seven incoming lacrosse student-athletes are making their way to Detroit from outside the state of Michigan.
Morgan Girardi (Watertown, N.Y. / Watertown), Lexie Kinmond (Peterborough, Ont. / Holy Cross Catholic), Emma Leszczak (Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove), Ali Magyaros (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls), Alex McCafferty (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy),
Allison McDonough (Vero Beach, Fla. / Vero Beach) and Kaitlyn Wandelt (Sayville, N.Y. / Sayville) are all set to join the team as freshmen in the fall.
Morgan Girardi | Midfield/Defense
Watertown, N.Y. / Watertown HSHigh School: A four-year varsity player and three-year soccer player for Watertown High School and coach Tim Burr ... Helped Cyclones to undefeated 2013 season and Frontier League championship ... Named First Team Frontier League and First Team All-North in 2014 ... Scored 32 goals and tallied 39 points as a junior ... Selected Honorable Mention in 2013 ... Played club lacrosse for the Different Road Patriots.
Coach Maness on Girardi: "Morgan comes to us from central New York and will be a middle/defender for us. She has great stick skills and can really move the ball in transition. Morgan comes from a lacrosse family with two other sisters who excel in the sport."
Lexie Kinmond | Attack
Peterborough, Ont. / Holy Cross Catholic
High School: Played four years of varsity lacrosse for the Hurricanes ... Also played four years of basketball in high school ... Named Team MVP in lacrosse in 2013 and 2014 ... Helped team to four-straight OFSAA appearances ... A COSSA gold medalist in 2013 and 2014 for the Holy Cross Hurricanes ... A three-time Provincial bronze medalist (2009, 2010, 2012) as part of the Kawartha Lacrosse club team, which she has played on since 2009 ... Part of Peterborough Lakers box lacrosse club team from 2008-2014, earning the 2011 gold medal as a team captain ... Won back-to-back gold medals for Team Ontario in 2010 and 2011 and was named Championship game MVP and to All-Star Team.
Coach Maness on Kinmond: "Lexie will be an offensive threat for us. She is a powerful attacker with a great shot. I am thrilled to get the opportunity to coach Lexie, and I know she has what it takes to be a key player in the Atlantic Sun."
Emma Leszczak | Attack
Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove HS
High School: A four-year letter winner on varsity for Woodgrove High School and coach Bob Fuller ... Helped the Wolverines to a 5A VHSL state championship in 2014 after winning district and regional titles ... Had three goals in the state championship win in 2014 ... Named First Team All-District and All-Region Honorable Mention in 2014 ... Also Named All-County in 2014 ... Part of teams that also won regional titles in 2013 and 2012 ... Played club for Future Elite Lacrosse for three seasons.
Coach Maness on Leszczak: "Emma is our first recruit from Virginia in school history. She will be a huge asset to us on the offensive end. She is really good at working off the ball and getting open for shot opportunities. Emma has good size so she will be a force inside the eight-meter."
Ali Magyaros | Midfield
Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls HS
High School: A three-year varsity letter winner for Chagrin Falls High School and coach KC White ... Also lettered for two years in soccer ... Helped Tigers to three straight state semifinal appearances (2012-14) ... Named Academic All-Ohio in 2014 ... Played club for Midwestern Force Lacrosse for five years.
Coach Maness on Magyaros: "Ali will be working in the midfield for us. She is known for her hustle plays and speed. She can play all over the field and has great confidence, regardless of the situation."
Alex McCafferty | Defense
Galena, Ohio / Olentangy HS
High School: Lettered all four seasons in lacrosse and field hockey for Olentangy High School and coach Amy Halls ... Helped Braves to Final Four in Division 1 state tournament in 2014 ... Named Honorable Mention OCC during her sophomore and junior seasons ... Selected varsity captain for field hockey during her junior and senior years ... Named a scholar athlete all four years ... Played club for Lucky Lax for three years.
Coach Maness on McCafferty: "We will be playing Alex as a defender. She is another hustle player and will be an asset in the backfield. She is smart with her on and off ball defense and will fit into our defensive schemes really well."
Allison McDonough | Goalkeeper
Vero Beach, Fla. / Vero Beach HS
High School: Lettered in lacrosse for three seasons at Vero Beach High School for coach Shannon Dean ... Helped Indians to four-straight state championships ... Selected Defensive MVP and First Team All-District as a junior in 2014 ... Earned Second Team All-Region and Second Team All-Area honors as well in 2014 ... Voted Rookie of the Year and earned Second Team All-District honors as a sophomore in 2013 ... Also named Honorable Mention All-Region in 2013 ... Named JV MVP during freshman year ... Made over 100 saves during junior season ... Had a 21-save game on 32 shots in 12-11 win against St. Anthony's during sophomore season ... Also participated on varsity weightlifting during freshman season ... Played club lacrosse for Stickbenders for seven years, winning several tournaments.
Coach Maness on McDonough: "Allison is such a prominent high school goalie from a nationally-ranked Vero Beach program that I think she will easily transition to the college game. Allison has great height and reach for those tough saves. Her presence in the goal cage is known and she does a good job communicating with the defense."
Kaitlyn Wandelt | Midfield
Sayville, N.Y. / Sayville HS
High School: Earned four letters on varsity for Sayville High School and coach Adam Sznitken ... Has also earned three letters in basketball and soccer for the Golden Flashes ... Helped lacrosse team to league titles in sophomore and junior seasons ... Won County championship in 2014 ... Named All-Conference in 2013 and earned All-County accolades in 2014 ... Voted All-Conference and All-County in soccer, helping team to league and county championships ... Had 56 goals and 24 assists as a junior in 2014 and entering her senior season, she had 87 goals and 41 assists on varsity ... Played club lacrosse for LI Top Guns.
Coach Maness on Wandelt: "Kaitlin comes to us from Long Island, New York. She brings a different style of play to us that will add another element to our team. Kaitlin has great stick skills and is a natural in the midfield. We will be looking for her to play both sides of the ball and be a key asset in transition play."
The Titans are coming off their third-straight trip to the Atlantic Sun Championship game. Detroit loses six seniors from a 2015 team that set a school record with 10 victories on the year.
