National Girls & Women In Sports Day Sign Up
DETROIT (2/20/2014) -- A three-game homestand for the Titans kicks off this weekend as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team gets ready for a showdown with high-scoring Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 22. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., on Dick Vitale Court inside historic Calihan Hall.
The game is also part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which will celebrate 28 years of an annual event that brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States. The event is open to all girls ages 6-13, who will take part in a number of exciting events.
The celebration will feature a variety of sports clinics at Calihan Hall, where student-athletes from nearly all of UDM's varsity teams will provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations with all the signees. Following the event all the participants will come together on the court for a special halftime presentation with the UDM cheer and dance team.
Detroit will look to get back on track after two tough road losses last week. The Titans did get an award for their hard work as rookie
Megan Galloway was tabbed the Horizon League Freshman of the Week after tallying a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds at Oakland and 13 points with seven boards at Cleveland State.
The contest might also see some history being made as senior
Senee Shearer is just seven 3-pointers away from breaking the school record of 217, held by Michelle James (1998-02). Shearer is currently second in the HL in scoring at 19.9 points per game.
Following the contest, the Titans will host Valparaiso next Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Youngstown State next Saturday, Mar. 1. For ticket information to those games, click here.

DETROIT VS. WRIGHT STATE
Detroit will look to even the season series and knock off a Wright State team that is looking to win the Horizon League regular season. WSU stopped UDM's four game winning streak in the series back in January, but the Titans still lead the all-time match-up, 25-19.
UDM is 13-8 against Wright State in the Motor City and has won three in a row and four of the last five at Calihan Hall.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS
Wright State has won two in a row and four of the last five as the Raiders come into the game at 19-7, 8-3 in the Horizon League. They are currently just 1/2 behind Green Bay for first place.
WSU leads the HL in scoring at 82.4 ppg., but it has cranked it up with four-straight games with 92 or more points, tallying 95.2 points in this span.
Kim Demmings - the HL leading scorer at 22.5 ppg. - is coming off a 36-point outburst at Oakland on Tuesday. She is also averaging 6.5 rpg., and 2.4 apg.
Ivory James is tallying 17.7 ppg., along with 6.5 rpg., while Tay'ler Mingo is posting 14.0 ppg.
BALANCED OFFENSE
Since junior
Ellisha Crosby went down with an injury late in December and senior
Megan Hatter was hurt in early January, the Titans have been looking for that extra scorer to go with senior
Senee Shearer and in the last five games, the balance has been there.
Detroit has seen four players score in double figures in three-straight games and four of the last five. Even in the game that UDM did not have four players with 10 or more, the Titans had two players record 20-point games in Shearer and sophomore
Tayelor McCalister against Green Bay.
In the Titans latest effort at Cleveland State, freshman
Haleigh Ristovski led the way with a game-high 19 points, sophomore
Tayelor McCalister had 16, senior
Senee Shearer netted 14 and freshman
Megan Galloway finished with 13.
Against Oakland, Galloway led the way with 21 points, while McCalister had 19, Shearer 17 and freshman
Minisha Frederick-Childress added 10.
Against Milwaukee, Shearer netted 21, Ristovski had 15, McCalister 12 and Frederick-Childress chipped in with 10.
ANOTHER FRESHMAN HONOR
For the second-straight week and the third time this season, a Titan rookie has earned praise from the Horizon League as
Megan Galloway was honored as the HL Freshman Of The Week this past Monday.
It is the second time this season that Galloway has been tabbed with the accolade (Dec. 2) as well as the second week in a row following
Minisha Frederick-Childress.
Galloway was a force inside for the Titans last week as she netted double digits on the road at Oakland and at Cleveland State in averaging 17.0 ppg., 8.5 rpg., while shooting 55.1% (16-of-29).
She began the week by tallying a game and career-high 21 points with 10 rebounds against the Golden Grizzlies for her second double-double of the campaign. She then had 13 points and seven boards in just 18 minutes of court time against the Vikings.
On the year, Galloway has played in 22 games with 16 starts and is averaging 6.8 ppg., and 5.5 rpg. - 17th in the HL - while shooting 52.0% (64-of-123) with a pair of double-doubles, including a season-best 11 caroms at Youngstown State.
AERIAL ASSULT
A three-point threat might not be sufficient enough to describe
Senee Shearer's game.
In her career, Shearer has attempted 993 shots and 635 of them have been from behind the arc. That means 63.9% of her career looks have been from downtown.
Her 237 three-point attempts on the season are second in the country behind only Charleston Southern's Erin Bratcher (259).
Shearer has also made 211 career 3-pointers, second in school history and just six away from school record-holder Michelle James (1998-02), who had 217.
She recently passed Coach Rademacher in that race as she had 201 in 568 attempts in 117 career games.
Coach Rademacher does have her beat in total points with 1,686 points – compared to 1,140 for Shearer - as she hit on more than 250 more field goals and she also dished out 439 career assists to Shearer's 141.
FRESHMEN STEPPING UP
Freshmen usually have their ups and downs, but in a season that has seen the Titans use five of their six freshmen, a few have contributed some big games recently.
Haleigh Ristovski nailed five 3-pointers en route to 15 points at Youngstown State and then matched that against Milwaukee before setting a new career high with 19 at Cleveland State.
Megan Galloway tallied her second double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds at Oakland and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds at YSU, while
Reyna Montgomery tied her season high for the third time with 11 markers at Milwaukee and against Oakland.
Meanwhile,
Minisha Frederick-Childress was inserted into the starting line-up six games ago and has had a few career performances with a season-high 11 points and six assists against the Penguins, 10 points and a season-high nine boards versus the Panthers and 10 points with four caroms and a career-best seven assists at Oakland.
FEELING PINK
If you are coming to historic Calihan Hall this month to see the red, white and blue, then you will see a different color as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will sport pink uniforms for its home games during the month of February.
The team also took part of the Play 4Kay initiative on Saturday, Feb. 8, in its home game against Milwaukee.

Shearer now has 1,140 points and is just three away from 16th place. She is currently second in the Horizon League - and 36th in the nation - in scoring at 19.9 points per game, trailing only Wright State's Kim Demmings' 22.5.
