Detroit Edged by First Place Green Bay, 75-66, on Senior Day

DETROIT (3/1/14) – Four Titans scored in double figures including senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell to Green Bay, 75-66, Saturday during Senior Day at historic Calihan Hall.

With the loss the Titans become the No. 8 seed in the Horizon League Tournament and will travel to Wisconsin to face the No. 5 seed Milwaukee on Tuesday, March 4. Green Bay finished the regular season as the No. 1 seed and will get a double bye to the HL Semifinals.

Bruinsma finished with 12 points and six rebounds in his final regular season game on Dick Vitale Court, while his co-captain teammate Juwan Howard, Jr. added a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Matthew Grant pitched in 13 points with five rebounds, while sophomore guard Carlton Brundidge added 10 points.

Green Bay (24-5, 14-2 HL) led 37-30 at the half, before Detroit used an 11-4 run to tie the game at 41 with 16:10 left. The Phoenix then built a 59-52 lead with 8:27 left before the Titans answered back with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to one, 59-58. But that was as close as the score would get as Green Bay closed the game with a 16-8 run over the final five minutes.

Detroit (13-18, 6-10 HL) opened the game with a 13-5 run during the first four minutes of action as Grant and Bruinsma made back-to-back three-pointers forcing the Phoenix to call a timeout. Following the stoppage of play Green Bay came back with a 9-0 run to take a14-13 lead with 14:49 left. The Phoenix then extended their lead to 25-20 with 9:17 left, before the Titans bounced back to tie the score at 28. Green Bay then pieced together another 9-0 run to build a 37-28 lead, before senior center Ugochukwu Njoku made a 15-foot jumper in the closing seconds to make the score 37-30 during intermission. Howard led Detroit with 10 points in the first stanza, while Grant added eight.

Keifer Sykes led Green Bay with a game-high 29 points, while Carrington Love and Greg Mays scored 11 points apiece.

Detroit finished shooting 39 percent (23-58) overall and 40 percent (6-15) from downtown, while Green Bay made 48 percent (26-54) overall and 52 percent (9-17) from downtown. Both teams made 14 free throws and Green Bay won the battle of the boards 36-35.

Detroit the No. 8 seed in the Horizon League Tournament will play at Milwaukee the No. 5 seed on Tuesday, March 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (ET) at U.S. Cellular Arena and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
