Freshman Wilks Earns Second in 60 Meter Finals

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (3/2/2014) -- The 2014 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Sunday as the University of Detroit Mercy men's indoor track and field team team saw freshman Brandon Wilks come in second in the 60 meter finals at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS).
 
The UDM men finished with 52 points and ended up in fifth place, just 12 points behind UIC for fourth place. Milwaukee earned the men's title with 158 points. Overall the UDM men's and women's teams finished with 142 combined points and third place overall.
 
Wilks burst onto the Horizon League scene in day one with the top qualifying mark of 6.94 in the 60 meters. Wilks finished second overall in the finals with a time of 6.95, just .01 behind the leader. Senior Charles Anthony ran 7.06 in the finals to capture seventh place.

Wilks and Anthony were back-to-back in the 200 meters as Anthony was fifth at 22.06 and Wilks was sixth at 22.23.
 
In the 4x400 meter relay, the group of sophomore Colton Wirgau, freshman Joe Harmon, Wilks, and Parris as the anchor finished with a time of 3:17.33 to place second behind Milwaukee.
 
Freshman Khalil Parris was third in the 400 meter run with a time of 48.89.
 
In the 800 meters, sophomore Joshua Carolin took the early lead and finished in fourth with a time of 1:54.62.
 
The Titans had a pair of runners in the 60 meter hurdles in freshman Ilia Panev and senior Steven Ivanics. Ivanics finished with a time of 8.43 and came in seventh while Panev was .02 seconds ahead with a mark of 8.41 and a sixth place finish.
 
Sophomore Austin Wigent finished seventh in the 3000m with a time of 8:40.05. Senior Martin Nelkie ran a personal best of 8:44.27 to finish tenth overall and was right in front of sophomore Derek Gielarowski who was 11th at 8:45.95 and freshman Ryan Leahy who was 12th with a time of 8:48.19.
 
Freshman Dylan Kruis wrapped up competition in the heptathlon for Detroit starting with a PR run of 9.82 in the 60 meter hurdles. Kruis cleared 3.05m in the pole vault for fifth and ran another PR in the 1000m with a time of 3:13.84. Kruis finished seventh overall with 3656 points.
 
The 2014 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be May 2-4 and also hosted by Youngstown State.
