Titans Fall in Cincinnati

Box Score

CINCINNATI (3/23/2014) -- The temperature was 41 degrees and the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team scored first but the Titans fell 14-5 to the Cincinnati Bearcats Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.

Junior Tessa Keuler scored two goals and added an assist while freshman Kelsi Pritchard, senior Vittoria Wallace, and sophomore Kylie Birney all added single tallies for Detroit (1-7, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) against Cincinnati (6-3).

Junior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made six saves for Detroit and had a game-high seven ground balls while sophomore defender Morgan Miller and Pritchard each had two ground balls. McCormick also had two caused turnovers with Miller, Pritchard, Keuler, Birney, and junior defender Morgan Lear all having one also. Birney added a game-high four draw controls while senior Erin Campbell had two.

15 seconds into the game, Cincinnati took a yellow card giving Detroit the early advantage. The Titans took the early lead on the ensuing man-advantage as Wallace took a pass from Keuler to make it 1-0. With the assist, Keuler tied UDM's all-time record in career assists with the 41st  helper of her career.

The Bearcats tallied the next three goals to go up 3-1 with 20:29 left to play in the first.

Birney came back with her team-best 14th of the year to cut the lead to 3-2 with 15:38 to play but UC rallied to make it a 4-2 advantage.

Keuler added a goal with 13:29 remaining in the first half to make it 4-3 to but two more Cincinnati strikes made it 6-3 heading into halftime.

Detroit had a 6-4 edge in draw controls at the break but it was UDM goalkeeper McCormick who was charged with a couple robberies in the first half as her saves kept the game close for Detroit. McCormick stopped an opportunity where Cincinnati passed the ball from one side of the net to the other creating a wide open net but McCormick went from side-to-side to stone her cold.

The second half saw Cincinnati come out with two goals to take an 8-3 lead.

Pritchard tried to rally the Titan troops by netting her eighth goal of the year and cut the lead to 8-4.

UC came up with six straight goals to make it 14-4 with 5:01 left and put the game out of reach for Detroit.

The Titans added another goal late in the contest after Miller caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and passed the ball up to Keuler who took it the rest of the way to score and make it 14-5 with 1:42 left on the clock.

Cincinnati finished with a 24-14 overall shooting advantage while Detroit was 8-of-11 on clear attempts. Cincinnati had the 11-10 edge in draw controls.

The next game for UDM will be on March 27 at Titan Field in Detroit as UC Davis will be in town for a 2:00 p.m. game.
