DETROIT (3/27/2014) -- The UC Davis Aggies made the trip from California to play the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon at Titan Field and the Aggies were too much for Detroit playing to a 13-2 victory.
The Titans (1-8, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) received goals from sophomore
Kylie Birney and senior
Erin Campbell. Junior
Annie Mendoza had an assist on Campbell's goal.
Birney added two ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover against the Aggies (6-3) and now leads the team with 15 goals and has scored in seven straight games.
Junior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made seven saves in the cage for Detroit and added a game-high five ground balls. Sophomore
Ally Shrader led the Titan defense with three caused turnovers while juniors
Amanda Guthrie and
Tessa Keuler, along with freshman Miklain Hunstman all had two caused turnovers. Freshman
Kelsi Pritchard, Birney, and junior
Morgan Lear had one caused turnover each.
Keuler, Birney, and Lear all had two ground balls while Shrader, Huntsmann, and Pritchard all had one.
UC Davis finished with a 23-14 shooting advantage and the Titans forced 20 Aggie turnovers. UC Davis had the slight edge in overall ground balls, 19-14, and had a 12-5 lead in draw controls.
The Aggies were up 3-0 after 6:47 of game time but the Titans held the California school in check until 10:47 was left in the first half and UC Davis scored the first of two straight goals.
Campbell countered with a goal for Detroit with 5:22 to play taking a pass from Mendoza. For Campbell, it was her 10th goal of the year and she is now second on Detroit in goals.
The second Titan goal immediately followed as UDM scored with the advantage as Birney muscled her way to the net to score with 4:53 left that made the score 5-2.
A sixth Aggie goal made the score 6-2 heading into the break. The Titans were being outshot by one, 11-10, and were down one in draw controls, 5-4, but held the advantage in ground balls, 9-8.
UC Davis came out with seven goals in the second half of play to take a 13-2 advantage. The last came with 13:09 in regulation as the Aggies held on for the win.
Detroit will look ahead to its next game against Niagara on Wednesday, April 2 at 3:00 p.m. in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
