2014 Detroit Men's Golf Schedule
DETROIT (3/31/2014) -- The winter weather has been a real battle and it took another bite out of the action on the links as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team announced a few changes to the spring schedule.
To start things off, the weather actually cooperated yesterday as the Titans traveled to conference rival Wright State for a match play event against the Raiders at the Par 72, 7,007-yard Gem City Golf Club in Fairborn, Ohio.
"I think the golf we got in was even more important that the match score itself," said head coach Mark Engel. "We haven't played at home yet because of the weather so we were really glad to actually get out on a golf course for the day. It definitely helped us get ready for the next tournament."
The red, white and blue were just happy to get on the course as the Titans fell 3-1 in a 27-hole match. The lone win on the day came in dominating fashion as freshman
Kyle Gaines breezed through his opponent, 8 & 7.
"Kyle was the only one of our guys to really get off to a good start and he kept it up all day," added Coach Engel.
Sophomore
Wil Wittmann dropped a close 1-up affair and senior
Brendan Leonard was upended 2-up. The other showdown saw freshman
Spencer Lendzion fall 3 & 2.
"Lenny (Brendan) would have won if it were an 18-hole match and as it was, his match went all the way to the 27th hole before it was decided," said Coach Engel. "Wil was way down at the start, but came back well and took it to the last hole also. He played his last 18 holes at 2-under par and Spencer was on the ropes, but he worked hard and won three straight holes before it finally ended."
UDM also announced that its' Detroit Titan Invitational from April 14-15 at Prestwick Village Country Club has been cancelled along with the Detroit Golf Club Invitational on April 11.
In place of the Detroit Titans Invitational and falling exactly on the same dates, UDM will now play in the Red Flash Invite hosted by St. Francis (PA) at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.
