2014 Senior Day For Women’s Lacrosse Set for Saturday

DETROIT (4/18/2014) -- Senior Day has arrived and for the two seniors on the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team, the final home game of 2014 will be on Saturday as the Titans face the Stetson Hatters in an Atlantic Sun contest set to begin at 12:00 p.m. ET. The game is also a critical match in the Atlantic Sun as both teams are vying to be in the top four and earn a berth in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.

Last Time Out
Detroit (2-12, 1-2 Atlantic Sun) is coming off a 16-6 loss to Michigan on Wednesday at Titan Field. UDM had a 5-4 lead with 7:13 left to play in the first half but Michigan closed out the first half with five straight goals to take a 9-5 lead. The second half began with six straight tallies from UM who took control with a 15-5 lead. UDM goalkeeper Lexie McCormick had 13 saves and a game-high six ground balls while Erin Campbell had a pair of goals for the Titan. Michaela Schwartz added a goal and an assist and Tessa Keuler, Kylie Birney, and Vittoria Wallace each had goals for Detroit in the first ever meeting between Detroit and Michigan. Amanda Guthrie had four ground balls while Kylie Birney added three. Guthrie, Birney, and Campbell each helped defensively with two caused turnovers while Annie Mendoza, Miklain Huntsman, and Birney each had two draw controls.
 
Too Close to Call
The Titans are 1-2 overall in the six-team Atlantic Sun Conference and are currently in fourth place behind Stetson who is 1-1 in the conference. The top four teams in the league after the regular season earn a berth in the Atlantic Sun Semifinals in Jacksonville May 2-4 with the prize of the tournament being a bid to the NCAA Tournament. 2013 was the first ever Atlantic Sun Women's Lacrosse Championship and the Titans reached the finals and played against Jacksonville.
 
The Hatters
Stetson (1-13, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) is now in its second year of women's lacrosse and features just two upperclassmen on its roster. The lone victory for the Hatters this season came against Kennesaw State on April 5 as the two teams met in Kennesaw, Ga. in which Stetson won 23-21 in overtime. The other Atlantic Sun game for Stetson came its last time out as the Hatters fell 24-8 to Jacksonville. Detroit and Stetson met twice last year, including in the A-Sun Semifinals, and the Titans won the two meetings by a combined 24 goals. This year, Christina Loya and Danielle Horgan lead the team with 22 points each as Loya has 17 goals and five assists and Horgan has 14 goals and eight helpers. Caili Guilday has played in all 14 of the team's games in net making 162 saves. 
 
Senior Role Call
Fifth year senior Erin Campbell and graduate student Vittoria Wallace will each be recognized prior to the start of the Stetson game. Campbell has been with the Titans for five years suffering through nagging injuries the first three years before becoming an offensive team leader in each of the last two seasons. Wallace joined Detroit in January just in time for the 2014 season and has been a senior leader since day one. Friends, family, teammates, and administrators will join the two seniors in a short ceremony scheduled to take place prior to the start of the game.
 
Century Club Members Only
Erin Campbell and Tessa Keuler reached the 100-point mark in their careers with their multi-point efforts Sunday at Howard. They join an exclusive list of Emily Boissonneault (272 points), Anna Eidem (234 points), Zaynib Hamze (136 points), and Corina Mahorn (135 points) as the only UDM women's lacrosse players to tally 100 or more career points. Campbell, a senior, has 107 points with 85 goals and 22 assists and is 15 goals away from 100 in her career. Keuler has 53 goals and 49 assists for 102 points in 50 games as a junior.
 
Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week
Junior Morgan Lear was named the Atlantic Sun Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as she won the award for the first time in her career. Lear caused four turnovers against Howard on Sunday and added three against California. For the week, Lear also grabbed four ground balls. The defensive award was the second honor for Detroit this year with the other coming back on Feb. 10 when Lexie McCormick earned the recognition.
 
Milestone Markers
Head Coach Laura Maness is tied for UDM's all-time career record in coaching victories with 15 after Sunday's win vs. Howard and is one win away from becoming the new outright all-time leader.
 
NCAA Stats
The NCAA releases weekly statistical updates on Monday. This week's rankings saw junior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick rank third in ground balls with 3.38 per contest and she was also ninth in both total saves with 122 and saves per game at 9.38. Her save percentage of .440 is ranked 44th in the nation. Tessa Keuler is ranked 55th in assists per game with 1.23 and 57th in total assists with 16. Defender Morgan Miller is 73rd in caused turnovers with 1.31 per game. The Titans as a team are 30th in ground balls with 17 per game and 32nd in caused turnovers with nine per contest.
 
Remembering 2013
The Titans finished 5-14 overall in 2013 but 3-1 in the Atlantic Sun and entered the A-Sun Championship as the No. 2 seed and fell to the top seed Jacksonville in the finals. The Titans swept the A-Sun individual awards handed out on Wednesday as graduated senior Zaynib Hamze was named the Player of the Year and Lexie McCormick garnered the Defensive Player of the Year award. In addition, a total of eight Titans were named to either the All-Conference First or Second Team, three players were named to the All-Conference Freshmen Team.
 
Welcome Back
The Titans return two of its top three scorers in 2014 in senior Erin Campbell (39 goals, 50 points) and junior Tessa Keuler (40 points). Also returning on this year's squad is McCormick and junior defenders Amanda Guthrie (team-high 55 ground balls) and on-the-field leader Taylor Marshall along with sophomore returners Morgan Miller (named to All-Conference Freshman team in 2013) and Ally Shrader (19 games played as a freshman). Also returning will be sophomores Kylie Birney and Michaela Schwartz (both named to All-Conference Freshman team in 2013), Jenna Payne, and Ty Dykes. Redshirt junior Morgan Lear (24 ground balls in 2012) also returns to the squad after missing all of last season with an injury and will be making her debut in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2014.
 
Newcomers
Eight newcomers will join the Titans including graduate student Vittoria Wallace who came to Detroit in January 2014 after transferring from Oakland University where she played club lacrosse her previous three academic years. Redshirt junior Annie Mendoza will also be making her debut in 2014 as a Titan this year after transferring to Detroit for the 2012-13 academic year but missed the entire 2013 season due to an injury. Six freshmen in Miklain Huntsman, Kelsi Pritchard, Julie Castner, Annelise Niermann, Lauren Sharkey, and Jaclyn Snyder will look to make their mark with the Titans in 2014. Assistant Coach Jake Marmul will also make his Titan debut in 2014 after serving in the same role with the University of Notre Dame women's lacrosse team last year.
 
2014 Preseason Coaches Poll
Detroit grabbed 28 points and was pegged to finish second behind Jacksonville and its 36 votes.  Stetson was third with 25 points. Campbell, Guthrie and McCormick were picked to represent the Titans on the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team. Lear and Mendoza were named to the A-Sun Newcomer Watch List.
 
Home Cooking
The Titans had just five home games in 2013 compared to 11 on the road. Detroit will look to have a home field advantage in 2014 with nine home contests including an in-state match-up with the first-year varsity program Michigan Wolverines on April 16. With nine home games for the Titans, it will be the largest home schedule Detroit has ever had in its history with the second largest in 2011 when UDM had eight home games.
 
State of the Atlantic Sun
2014 will be the second year of women's lacrosse action in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Conference will feature six teams including Detroit, Elon, Howard, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville, and Stetson. Elon will be leaving the A-Sun for the Colonial Athletic Association in 2015 but Furman, Mercer, and Old Dominion will join the A-Sun. In 2016, the A-Sun will be nine teams strong as Central Michigan will join the league.
 
And Then There Was One
The Titans have one game remaining on the 2014 regular season slate after facing Stetson and it will be on April 26 at Kennesaw State at 11:00 a.m. ET.
