Box Score DETROIT (4/19/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team stormed out to a 5-0 lead and rolled to an 11-6 victory over the Stetson Hatters on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Titan Field.
Vittoria Wallace and
Erin Campbell were the two seniors on the Titans who were recognized prior to the start of the game. Wallace joined the Titans (3-12, 2-2 Atlantic Sun) in January 2014 after playing club lacrosse at Oakland for three years and is now pursuing her master's degree at Detroit. Campbell has been with the Titans for five years and after battling three years of nagging injuries, returned in 2013 to play 19 games and score 39 goals and this year has played in 14 games and is tied for the team lead with 23 goals.
Campbell's latest two goals came against Stetson (1-14, 1-2 Atlantic Sun) on Saturday as she started the Titan scoring 1:04 into the game.
Tessa Keuler had three goals for Detroit while
Annie Mendoza had two goals and an assist.
Kylie Birney netted two goals and
Michaela Schwartz and
Lauren Sharkey also added single markers. Sharkey added a helper on Campbell's second of the game with 6:50 left in the first half.
Titan goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick was at her best for Detroit as she posted 15 saves and added five ground balls. Mendoza, Schwartz, and Keuler also each had two. Schwartz and Mendoza both filled the stat sheet as Schwartz added three caused turnovers and two draw controls while Mendoza had a caused turnover and four draw controls.
Campbell's first goal got the ball rolling for Detroit as Birney, Mendoza, Keuler, and then Mendoza put the Titans up 5-0 with 18:48 left in the opening frame. Three goals from Stetson reduced the lead to 5-3 but Birney and Campbell followed as both scored their 23rd goal of the season. A late Hatter goal put Detroit up 7-4 at the half.
Stetson came out of the break and cut into the lead with another goal but it was Keuler who tallied her second and third goals of the game to push the Titan lead to 9-5.
One last Stetson goal made it 9-6 but Sharkey's goal from Mendoza with 10:19 left in regulation put the Titans in a position to run down the clock. Detroit did just that and added a late insurance goal from Schwartz with 2:02 left in regulation that finalized the 11-6 score.
UDM finished with a 30-27 overall shooting advantage over Stetson including a 27-21 edge in shots on goal.
With the win, Detroit now sits in third place in the Atlantic Sun just ahead of Stetson. A Titan win on Friday in the last game of the regular season and Detroit will officially clinch a berth in the Atlantic Sun Semifinals May 2-4 in Jacksonville, Fla. where the top four teams in the league battle for the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Detroit's final game of the regular season will be Saturday, April 26 at Kennesaw State at 11:00 a.m. ET.
