Box Score NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (4/2/2014) -- The theme was pink in honor of breast cancer awareness as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell 14-4 to the Niagara Purple Eagles Wednesday afternoon at Niagara Field.
Senior
Erin Campbell led Detroit (1-9, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) offensively with two goals and a game-high seven shots. Sophomore
Michaela Schwartz and junior
Tessa Keuler each added single markers for the Titans.
Junior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made 10 saves in the cage for Detroit and added five ground balls. Sophomore
Kylie Birney had game-highs in ground balls with eight and in caused turnovers with four. Junior
Amanda Guthrie had four ground balls while Keuler and junior
Morgan Lear added two each. Guthrie and Schwartz had two caused turnovers and graduate student
Vittoria Wallace had three draw controls for Detroit against Niagara (4-5).
The Purple Eagles went up 3-0 before the first Titan goal lit up the scoreboard. That first goal came off a free position attempt from Pritchard who instead of shooting took the opportunity to pass it right to Schwartz who netted the goal with a shot off the ground that bounced right between the goalie's legs to make it 3-1 Niagara with 20:37 left to play in the first half.
The home team added two goals before Campbell's first of the game with 7:53 left in the opening half and NU up 5-2.
Niagara entered the break up by a 7-2 score with two more goals to close the first half.
The second half started and the Purple Eagles extended their lead to 10-2 with three goals.
Keuler countered with an unassisted goal with 11:50 to play in regulation to make the score 10-3.
Three more Niagara goals put the Purple Eagle lead at 13-3 with 7:10 remaining and hopes of a Titan rally dwindling.
Campbell recorded her 12th goal of the year and second of the day with 5:20 to play but it was the last goal Detroit would score. Niagara added a late marker in the final 1:07 for the final score, 14-4.
Niagara had a final 27-19 edge in total shots and 29-26 in ground balls. The Titans were 13-16 on clears in the game.
The next game for UDM will be on April 6 as Detroit returns home to Titan Field to face Jacksonville with game time set for 12:00 p.m.
