Box Score KENNESAW, Ga. (4/26/2014) -- Senior
Erin Campbell became the eighth Titan in the history of the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse program to record nine or points in a single game as her seven goals and two assists helped the Titans to a 17-7 win over the Kennesaw State Owls Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Campbell now has 94 goals in her career and leads the team with 30 goals on the season as she helped Detroit (4-12, 3-2 Atlantic Sun) clinch the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. For Campbell, it was a career-high in goals and points and the first time a Titan has scored nine or more points since Anna Eidem hit the mark April 20, 2012 at Presbyterian.
Campbell was not the only offense on the day as seven different Titans scored against Kennesaw State (1-12, 1-4 Atlantic Sun).
Annie Mendoza had four goals while
Julie Castner made her return to the lineup with two goals and an assist.
Michaela Schwartz,
Tessa Keuler,
Kylie Birney, and
Vittoria Wallace also each had single goals for Detroit in the victory.
Lexie McCormick made nine saves in goal for Detroit and Mendoza and Castner each had two caused turnovers while six other Titans recorded a caused turnover on the day.
Kennesaw State started the game with two quick goals in the opening two minutes but the UDM offense was just emerging from its slumber. Campbell netted the first two goals of the game to tie the game, 2-2, and KSU would add a third goal but the next five tallies came from the Detroit Titans.
Mendoza scored from the free position and then took a pass from Campbell to give Detroit a 4-3 lead. Keuler netted her 17th of the year and then it was Wallace who put the Titans up 6-3 with a free position goal with 6:55 left in the opening half. Birney added her 24th of the year with an assist to Castner for the final UDM goal of the half. Kennesaw State added a late marker with 45 seconds left and the two teams went into halftime with Detroit up 7-4.
McCormick made four saves in the opening half as Kennesaw State's aggressive play led to a 19-11 KSU lead in ground balls at the break.
Detroit returned to play in the second half determined to take the victory and showed it with five straight goals. Campbell scored three in a row in a span of 5:36. Mendoza netted her third of the game, assisted by Campbell, and then Castner scored her first goal since March 11 against Delaware State to put UDM up 12-4 with 19:05 to play in regulation.
The Owls countered with two goals but Campbell and Mendoza responded once again as Detroit led 14-6 with 10:30 still to play in the second half.
KSU added one more goal with 9:53 left in the game but it was all Titans the rest of the way. Castner recorded her second of the day, Schwartz tallied a goal for Detroit, and Campbell finished the scoring for UDM. Campbell's seventh of the day with 1:41 left in the second half gave Detroit all its offense as the Titans held on for the 17-7 victory.
The next game for Detroit will be in the Atlantic Sun Semifinals on May 2 in Jacksonville, Fla. Start time and opponents will officially determined on Sunday after the final day of the Atlantic Sun regular season. Detroit will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
