Vote For Troy For Senior CLASS Award
DETROIT (4/5/2014) -- Junior
Shayne Adams had six goals and seven points and freshman
Jason Weber set a school record with 23 saves as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team roared back to a 12-11 victory at home in a late Saturday morning MAAC showdown.
The six goals was a season high for Adams who tied his career best with seven points as the all-time leading goal scorer in Titan history reached the 100-goal plateau and now has 105 in his career.
Senior
Tom Masterson tied his career high with three goals and five points, while junior
Brandon Beauregard tallied a pair of goals and assists. Senior
Alex Maini also had a good game with three helpers and a marker and junior
Scott Drummond and sophomore
Damien Hicks each added an assist.
The win moved Detroit to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC, while Marist fell to 3-7, 1-3 in league play in the pivotal conference game.
The Titans trailed 10-9 late in the third period when Masterson hooked up with his Canadian counterpart as Adams tied it all up at the 2:38 point of the third.
Masterson would be the playmaker again to give the Titans the lead as he found Maini for a score less than a minute into the fourth and midway through the period, Drummond was able to find Masterson who gave UDM a 12-10 advantage with 7:23 left.
Marist would trim that to a one-goal lead, 12-11, with 4:35 remaining and the Red Foxes would have a few opportunities to try and tie it up, but the Titan defense held strong. First, sophomore
Paul Bitetti came up with a caused turnover with 58 seconds left and two Marist shots inside of 10 seconds did not go in with Weber putting the finishing touches on his career day with his 23rd save with one tick on the clock.
Weber also had four ground balls, while senior
Troy Dennis had two caused turnovers and a GB. Junior
Chris Shevins had a caused turnover and three ground balls and Hicks also recorded four ground balls.
Detroit was outshot, 50-27, and Marist won the battle of ground balls, 43-28, but the top-ranked man-up unit in the nation was 2-for-4 on the day and the man-down held the Red Foxes to just 1-of-4.
It looked like a great start for the Titans as Adams found the back of the net for his 100th career marker less than two minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead, but Marist stormed back with five-straight goals to take a 5-1 advantage with seven minutes left in the first.
From that point on, UDM outscored the Red Foxes 11-6 in the final 52 minutes.
The Titans started the comeback with a pair of goals just 11 seconds apart as Beauregard fed Adams for one and then Hicks came up with an assist on his next and Detroit was within 5-3, but Marist was able to get one back for a 6-3 lead after the first.
Detroit would move even closer in the second as Masterson had back-to-back goals, but the Red Foxes were able to pick one up for a 7-5 advantage with 7:47 left in the second. The Titans then erased Marist's lead as Beauregard had an unassisted goal and Maini was able to feed Adams to knot it all up at 7-7 with 17 seconds remaining in the half, but the Red Foxes responded with a goal just six seconds later off a faceoff victory to take an 8-7 score at the break.
The red, white and blue started off strong in the third with Maini earning both assists as Beauregard had his second of the game and Adams scored his fifth to give the Titans a 9-8 lead just a few minutes in, but Marist showed some resilience with two goals in a minute span later in the period for a 10-9 advantage with 4:44 on the clock.
The Titans will now get ready for its final home game of the season next Saturday as Detroit welcomes Siena into Titan Field. It will also be Titan Club Day and Senior Day as first faceoff is scheduled for Noon.
