Box Score

TOLEDO, Ohio (8/22/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team dropped its regular season opener Friday, falling 3-1 at the University of Toledo. Playing in her first game for Detroit, freshman Suzie Redick (Northville, Mich. / Northville) tallied her first collegiate goal with the Titans (0-1-0) at Scott Park.

The Rockets (1-0-0) scored the game's first goal 16 minutes into the contest.

Redick subbed into the contest and scored on an assist from sophomore Anna Mindling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian). Redick's goal tied the game 1-1 in the 36th minute of the game.

"It was good to see Redick get her first collegiate goal, she's been working hard and she deserved it," UDM head coach Mike Lupenec said.

Toledo took a 2-1 lead just minutes before halftime and added another goal just three minutes into the second half.

"We made some crucial mistakes in our defensive zone and it cost us," Lupenec said. "But it's early in the season, we'll get back to work and get ready for the next game."

Senior Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ont. / Father Leo J. Austin) had three shots to lead the Titans, which had nine overall for the game. Toledo finished the contest with 18 shots, seven on goal. Junior Martha Dunbar (Burlington, Ont. / Nelson) and freshman Marina Manzo (Washington Twp., Mich. / Romeo) each played a half in net for Detroit, with each player making two saves.

Detroit returns to the pitch Friday, Aug. 29 for a 5 p.m. match at IPFW. The Titans home opener is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 31 against Central Michigan University.
