NORMAL, Ill. (9/15/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team was poised to make another move up the leaderboard, but the Titans never got that chance as the final round of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate was cancelled on Monday due to weather.
With the final 18 holes washed away, Detroit settled for 14th place after heating up in round two at the 6,915-yard, Par 71 Weibring Golf Club.
Detroit totaled a 604 (311-293) in the event, but only 20 strokes separated the Titans from first place and host Illinois State. UDM started the tournament with a 311 in Sunday's opening round, but quickly rebounded with a 293 in the afternoon, tied for the fourth best round in the event.
Sophomore
Kyle Gaines was on his game from the start and tied for seventh with a 144 (73-71). He played the back nine two under in round one and then shot an even-par 71 in round two and was just four shots off the lead. He finished the first 36 holes with a team-best six birdies and 24 pars.
Junior
Wil Wittmann and freshman
Matt Zerbel share 42nd with a 151 scorecard as both Titans started round one with a 77 before ending with a 3-over 74. Wittmann knocked in four birdies – three in round two – while Zerbel posted five, including four in the afternoon.
Junior
Aaron Knutson tied for 74th with a 158, but he made a dramatic improvement from the first to second round. Knutson tallied an 84 on Sunday morning, but then took 10 strokes off of that with the help of 14 pars and a birdie to record a 3-over 74 in the second session.
The Titans will be back in action in two weeks when they hit enemy territory at the Cleveland State Invitational, slated for Sept. 29-30 at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurura, Ohio.
