Titans History At Greater Louisville Classic
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (10/3/2015) -- Five Titans recorded new 8k career lows as the University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team earned fourth in the Blue Race at the 14th Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday.
Sophomore
Ben Kendell led the PR factory as he clocked a 24:46 for fourth place, his third top-10 finish of the season. It was also the best time ever for a Titan at the GLC.
Senior
Derek Gielarowski claimed 34th in 25:42, while senior
Austin Wigent took 42nd in 25:52, establishing a new low in the process.
As a team, Detroit had four runners scoring in the top 50 and five runners in the top 100 totaling 205 points on the day. The 205 is a program record for the race and the fourth-place effort is the best at Louisville in school history.
The red, white and blue will have one more regular season meet before the Horizon League Championship as the Titans take part in the Canisius Alumni Classic in two weeks, Oct. 17.

BEST SCHOOL FINISH
- The Titans 205 points at the Greater Louisville Classic is the lowest amount that the team has ever posted at the event, surpassing the 256 in the Blue Race in 2010.
- Detroit's fourth-place finish is also the lowest since taking sixth in 2010.
LOUISVILLE SLUGGERS
- Ben Kendell, Derek Gielarowski , Austin Wigent and Colin Creagh all tallied school marks for the Greater Louisville Classic.
- Kendell's 24:46 was a school record on the course, breaking the old time of 24:54 by Patrick Liederbach in 2008.
- Gielarowski now has the eighth-best time in school history at the GLC, while Wigent is now 12th.
- Creagh, who already owns the third best run with his 25:02 last year, etched the 16th best time in the school record book.
ANOTHER TOP 10 FOR KENDELL
- Ben Kendell has now posted top-10 finishes in all three races this season.
- It was also his seventh career top-10 effort in just 10 races.
- His time of 24:46 is nine seconds faster than his previous 8k low of 24:55, set at last year's Horizon League Championship.
- The time was also 39 seconds better than his run on the course in 2014.
DEREK KEEPS CHURNING
- Derek Gielarowski recorded his third top-40 run of the year.
- His time of 25:42 was 17 seconds off his PR, but he did set a new low on the course by 43 seconds from his 26:25 last season.
WIGENT'S TOP RUN
- Austin Wigent posted a career mark by three seconds with his 25:52, three seconds better than his 25:55 as last year's Horizon League Championship.
- He also took more than a minute off his time at Louisville last year (26:56).
FELTON LIKES EP TOM SAWYER PARK
- Charlie Felton's best 8k run was 26:27 at the Greater Louisville Classic last year, but he lowered that to 26:20 today.
