DETROIT (11/23/2015) -- Junior
Chris Jenkins led six Titans in double figures with 25 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team cruised to a 122-70 victory over Michigan-Dearborn on Monday night inside historic Calihan Hall.
It was the 91st career game in Titan history that Detroit crossed the 100-point plateau as UDM was on fire all game long. The red, white and blue finished shooting 57.4 percent (39-of-68), including knocking down a season-high 15 from behind the arc.
It was the highest scoring game since Detroit downed CCNY, 135-77, in 1979, which is also the Titan school record for points. The 122 points is also tied for the seventh highest scoring game in school history.
Freshman
Aaron Foster-Smith tallied 22 points with six rebounds as he was 8-of-12 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from three. Junior
Matthew Grant had 13 points, freshman
Josh McFolley 12 and junior
Jarod Williams finished with 10.
Senior
Carlton Brundidge dished out a career-high nine assists to go with 10 points and three steals and freshman
Gerald Blackshear ended the contest with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Michigan-Dearborn (4-5) came out with a lot of energy at the start and the game was tied, 7-7, three minutes in. UDM took the lead, but the Wolverines hung around and trailed by just one, 16-15, at the 12:24 mark.
That is when Detroit (2-1) made its big push to take a lead it would never relinquish going on a 15-6 run over the next three minutes for a 31-21 advantage.
The lead dipped to eight at 31-23, but the red, white and blue closed the half on a 31-11 spurt for a comfortable 62-34 cushion at the break.
Detroit shot 20-of-32 (62.5%) in the first stanza, including 7-of-13 from three-point range. The Titans also forced nine turnovers using that to score 16 points off UM-Dearborn miscues.
The second half saw plenty of fast-paced action for the Titans highlighted by a superb jam by Foster-Smith. He also connected on all three of his 3-point attempts in the period as 10 of the 11 Titans who played in the game ended up scoring.
Detroit racked up 40 total points off 21 Wolverines' turnovers in this one-sided affair and also had 46 points in the paint to U-M Dearborn's 20. However, its perimeter play was perhaps even more impressive as Detroit shot a sky-high 55.6 percent from beyond the arc as well as 74.4 percent at the free throw line hitting 29-of-39.
The Titans ended up outrebounding their counterparts by a 43-37 margin with nine steals and five blocks. Freshman
Jalen Gibson was a big reason why pulling down a game-high nine rebounds and scoring six points in just 11 minutes, while senior
Anton Wilson registered eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Titans, who are now averaging 96.3 points on the young season, go on the road to face Oral Roberts on Saturday, Nov. 28, in a 2:00 p.m. (EST) affair.
