Softball Drops First Two at USF Weekend Tournament

TAMPA (2/13/2015) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its first two games of the 2015 season at the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament on Friday. The Titans lost to FGCU 12-2 in the first game, before dropping the nightcap 8-0 to the host team USF.
 
Katy Severson went 1-for-2 in the first game with her first home run of the season, while Sam Henderson and Samantha Wolschleger both recorded a hit in the loss. Wolschleger also recorded her first stolen base of the season, while Alex Astorga recorded her first two of her career.
 
FGCU (3-4) scored the first two runs of the game, before Astorga stole third and advanced home on a throwing error to make the score 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
 
The Eagles would add one more run in the top of the second inning to go up 3-1, before Severson made it a one run game with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the second inning.
 
FGCU would score three more runs in the top of the third inning before adding six runs in the fourth to win the game 12-2.
 
Savanna Ferstle and Jennifer Cottle recorded their first collegiate hits in the second game as they both finished 2-for-2 at the plate in the Titans 8-0 loss to USF in the nightcap.
 
Detroit (0-2) will continue competition in the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament on Saturday when it faces St. Johns at 11:15 a.m. and No. 11 Tennessee at 6 p.m. at the USF Softabll Stadium.
