McGahuey Homers in Loss to St. John's at USF Weekend Tournament

TAMPA (2/14/2015) – Junior Christa McGahuey pitched 5.2 innings and hit her first home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team lost its first game on Saturday, 3-2, to St. John's in the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament. The Titans also dropped the nightcap, 14-0, to No. 11 Tennessee at USF Softball Stadium.

Detroit (0-4) scored first against the Red Storm as McGahuey reached on a fielding error, which brought home Kat Hoffman to put the Titans up 1-0 after the first inning.

St. John's (4-4) hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to tie the score 1-1, before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.

McGahuey then hit a solo homer – her first of the season – in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score 2-2, before the Red Storm were able to add one more run in the sixth inning to claim the win.

McGahuey threw 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs, while striking out four, before freshman Hannah Leppek came on in relief to throw 1.1 innings of perfect ball.

Detroit will conclude play in the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament on Sunday (Feb. 15) against Fordham at 11:15 a.m.
