TAMPA, Fla. (2/15/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team tallied two runs in the fourth and sixth innings and had the tying run on in the seventh, but the Titans couldn't even things up as UDM dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker to Fordham in the finale of the USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament on Sunday.
The season-opening tournament was hosted by the University of South Florida at the USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
Christa McGahuey went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Katy Severson was 1-for-3 with a RBI and
Kayla Kostich finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Titans (0-5) trailed by one heading into the seventh inning when they made one last run at the win.
Dayton Yingling started the frame reaching on a hit by pitch. She would move to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch, giving UDM two cracks at tying the score, but UDM just couldn't get her in.
Detroit trailed Fordham (6-4) 2-0 after one and trimmed that in half with a run in the second. With one out,
Jennifer Cottle walked and eventually stole second. Severson then ripped a two-out RBI double to right.
The Rams then took a 5-1 lead going into the fourth when the red, white and blue struck for two runs by taking advantage of a few Fordham mistakes. Kostich started the inning by reaching on an error. McGahuey then doubles to right putting runners on second and third with no outs. With Cottle up, a passed ball scored Kostich and then an error by the third baseman sent McGahuey home to make it a 5-3 contest.
Down 6-3 in the sixth, the Titans moved within one as Kostich had a one-out single and McGahuey drilled a homer to left field. The Titans would actually have the tying run on third with two outs as
Arriana Acuna moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third, but Severson's shot to the outfield was corralled by the right fielder.
Detroit will return to the diamond in two weeks when it travels to Louisiana to play in the Louisiana Tech Triple Play from Feb. 28-Mar. 1. The Titans are set to face the host Bulldogs twice as well as play two games against Southern.
