Severson, Leppek Lead Detroit Past Southern at LA Tech Triple Play

BATON ROUGE, La. (2/28/2015) – Junior Katy Severson drove in two runs and that was all freshman pitcher Hannah Leppek would need as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team claimed its first win of the season with a 4-0 shutout of Southern University on Saturday. The Titans dropped their first game of the LA Tech Triple Play 3-2 to the host Bulldogs.

Detroit (1-6) scored a run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice bunt from senior Vanessa Garcia, before adding three in the sixth inning – two off a single up the middle from Severson – to break open a close game against Southern.

Leppek threw a complete game allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking one to claim her first collegiate win.

In the first game, Louisiana Tech (11-5) built a 2-0 lead with one run in both the first and second inning, before the Titans cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly to centerfield from freshman Savanna Ferstle to make the score 2-1 in the fifth.

The Bulldogs would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, before Detroit added another run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error. The Titans had the tying run on third with two outs, but a groundball of the bat of Sam Henderson to the shortstop stopped the threat to end the game.

The red, white and blue will play the Bulldogs again at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, before facing Southern for a second time at 3:15 p.m. to complete the four game tournament.
