Severson Drives in Two More on Sunday at LA Tech Triple Play

BATON ROUGE, La. (3/1/2015) – Junior Katy Severson drove in two more runs, but the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final two games of the LA Tech Triple Play on Sunday.

The Titans lost their first game 9-2 to the host Bulldogs, before dropping the nightcap to Southern University 2-1 in five innings due to darkness.

Detroit (1-8) scored the first run against Southern off an RBI single from junior Christa McGahuey in the top of the first inning, before the Jaguars took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. Detroit would actually tie the score 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. But the game was then called due to darkness.

The officials conferred with the softball rule book and it was determined that as a result of the game being called, the game would be revert to the last complete inning according to rule 6.16.1. As a result of Southern (1-5) leading 2-1 after five innings, the Jaguars were awarded the win.

McGahuey finished 2-for-2 at the plate against the Jaguars with one RBI, while spending 2.2 innings in the circle giving up just one hit and striking out five.

Louisiana Tech (12-5) took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning, before Severson drove in two with a single down the left field line to cut the Bulldogs lead in half. Severson also drove in two runs on Saturday against Southern. But LA Tech would add five more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The red, white and blue will stay in Louisiana to face Nicholls State (3/2), Ball State (3/3) and Southeastern Louisiana (3/3), before playing a doubleheader at Southern Miss on March 4. Detroit will conclude its Spring Break tour with a doubleheader against Holy Cross on March 5 in Baton Rouge, La.
