OXFORD, Ohio (3/14/2015) – Senior
Kayla Kostich drove in three runs on Saturday but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped both games at the Miami Invitational.
The Titans lost their first game of the day 8-3 to North Dakota, before dropping the nightcap 14-3 to the tournament host Redhawks at the Miami Softball Stadium.
Detroit (1-16) held a 3-1 lead early in the first game, before North Dakota (5-15) scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and added one in both the third and fifth to claim the win.
The Titans scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning following an RBI double from
Jennifer Cottle and a 2-run single from Kostich to build a 3-1 lead. Detroit recorded five hits in that inning and had runners on second and third with two outs, before
Savanna Ferstle lined out to the shortstop to end the threat.
Detroit would record four more hits in the game and out hit North Dakota 10-7, but couldn't get anymore than one runner one in the final innings.
In the nightcap, Miami (11-8) built an 11-0 lead through the first three innings, before an RBI single from freshman
Sarah Mauser put the Titans on the board in the bottom half of the third.
The Redhawks would add three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to build a 14-1 lead, before Detroit responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, one off an RBI single from Kostich, but it wasn't enough as Miami got the win.
Kostich finished the day hitting 4-of-7 from the plate with one double and three RBI to extend her hitting streak to five-straight games.
The red, white and blue will complete the four-game tournament with a game against Robert Morris on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
