OXFORD, Ohio (3/15/2015) – Senior
Kayla Kostich extended her hitting streak to six-straight games but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final game of the Miami Invitational 5-0 to Robert Morris on Sunday at Miami Softball Stadium.
Kostich, who went hitless in the first five games of the season, has now recorded at least one hit in each of the Titans last six, including a 1-of-3 effort on Sunday. During the six-game stretch Kostich is hitting .421 (8-of-19) with two home runs and five RBI.
Robert Morris (12-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, before adding one more in the fourth and another in the fifth en route to recording its second win of the day. The Colonials won their first game on Sunday 3-0 over the Titans metro series rival Oakland.
Detroit (1-17) had a chance to get back into the game after loading the bases with only one out in the fourth inning. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat as the Titans went hitless the rest of the game.
Kostich,
Sarah Mauser and
Vanessa Garcia each recorded a single in the fourth inning to load the bases.
Detroit will begin Horizon League play next weekend when the Titans visit Youngstown, Ohio for a three-game set against the Penguins. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, March 20, before playing a doubleheader on Saturday at the YSU Softball Complex.
