YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (3/20/2015) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its first game of Horizon League play on Friday to Youngstown State, 8-5, at the YSU Softball Complex.
Senior
Kayla Kostich finished 2-of-4 at the plate with a 2-run homer to extend her hitting streak to seven-straight, while junior
Christa McGahuey also recorded a 2-run shot for the Titans in the loss.
Detroit (1-18, 0-1 HL) held a 3-2 lead – following Kostich's 2-run blast – heading into the fourth inning. Before Youngstown State (8-12, 1-0 HL) exploded with six runs to build a 8-3 lead.
In the fifth inning McGahuey would cut the Titans deficit to three, 8-5, following her third long ball of the season, but that was as close as the score would get as YSU held Detroit hitless over the final two innings.
During her seven-game hitting streak Kostich is averaging .434 (10-of-23) with three home runs and seven RBI.
The red, white and blue will complete the weekend series with a doubleheader against the Penguins on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
