Titans Fan 18 Falcons in Twin Bill at BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (3/31/2015) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team recorded a team-high 11 strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as Bowling Green used a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Titans 6-5 on Tuesday in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Meserve Field.

The Falcons (11-13) also took the first game, 2-1, even after junior Christa McGahuey recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in the circle.

The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at UDM's Buysse Ballpark, but moved to Bowling Green due to field conditions.

Detroit (2-23) opened the second game with a bang as senior Kayla Kostich continued her hitting prowess with a 2-run homer to left field – her team leading sixth of the season – to give the Titans a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons would take advantage of some fielding miscues by the Titans in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-2 lead, before adding another run in the second inning to make the score 5-2.

The score would stay the same until McGahuey ripped a base clearing, 3-run triple down the left field line to tie the score 5-5 in the fifth inning. The Titans loaded the bases for McGahuey after a single, error and walk.

The score would stay tied, until Aspen Searle hit a walk-off home run to dead center in the bottom of the ninth.

Dayton Yingling and Hannah Leppeck combined to pitch eight innings giving up just three earned runs on seven hits while striking out 11 Falcons. Yingling completed five innings of duty fanning a career-high seven batters in the process.

In the first game, McGahuey drove home the Titans only run of the game in the top of the first with a single to left field. The Falcons would answer back with two runs off McGahuey in the bottom of the inning after Trista Mokienko hit a 2-run homer over the left field wall to put BGSU up 2-1.

McGahuey would then put it in cruise control the rest of the game only allowing one hit over the next five innings, while striking out six in the circle. But the Titans couldn't get any runners across the plate either as BGSU was able to hold on for a 2-1 win.

Detroit will host Central Michigan on Wednesday, April 1 for a mid-week doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m., followed by the nightcap at 4:30 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark.
