DETROIT (4/1/2015) –
Kayla Kostich and
Christa McGahuey hit back-to-back home runs, but it wasn't enough as Central Michigan used an seventh inning rally to claim a 8-7 win in the nightcap Wednesday at Buysse Ballpark. The Chippewas also took the first game of the mid-week doubleheader 7-1.
Central Michigan (10-15) scored three runs in the first inning, before adding two in the second and two more in the third to build a 7-0 lead, before the Titans answered back with seven runs capped off by back-to-back home runs from Kostich and McGahuey in the fifth inning to tie the score.
Following the lead off home runs from Kostich and McGahuey in the fifth inning, the Chippewas made a pitching change that ended the threat immediately as Rachael Knapp struck out the next three Titans on 10 pitches.
After Hannah Leppeck kept CMU scoreless in the top of the sixth, Knapp continued with her success in the circle by recording three more strikeouts to keep the score tied heading to the seventh inning.
The Chippewas then took advantage of a Titans throwing error to take a 8-7 lead and that was more than enough for Knapp who ended the game with three more strikeouts to claim her second win of the day.
Knapp started the first game for CMU and went the distance holding Detroit to just one run on one hit while striking out 13. The Chippewas scored five runs in the first inning before adding two more in the fifth, before
Sarah Mauser recorded an RBI single for Detroit in the bottom of the fifth to score
Kat Hoffman for the Titans only run of the game.
