Softball Drops Both in Doubleheader at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (3/4/2015) – The Titans took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before four Golden Eagles crossed the plate to help lift Southern Mississippi past the University of Detroit Mercy softball team 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles went on to win the nightcap 7-4 at the USM Softball Complex.

In the first game, Detroit (1-13) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning after a pair of RBI singles from Savanna Ferstle and Alex Astorga. The Titans would then increase their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth following another RBI single, this one from Christa McGahuey.

Southern Miss (12-5) would get on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning to trim the lead to 4-1.

The Golden Eagles would win the game after recording four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh including a one-out single from Bailey Stokes to score the winning run.

In the nightcap, Southern Miss would score one run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead, before Detroit responded with one run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles would then score six times in the bottom of the fourth to break open a 7-3 lead.

Senior Kayla Kostich would hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 7-4, but that was as close as the score would get.

Detroit will conclude its Spring Break tour with a doubleheader against Holy Cross on Thursday, March 5 in Baton Rouge, La.
