DETROIT (4/15/2015) – Freshman
Alex Astorga recorded four hits and senior
Kayla Kostich hit her team leading eighth home run of the season but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped both games of a mid-week doubleheader to MAC rival Toledo on Wednesday at Buysse Ballpark.
The Rockets (17-24) took the first game 8-2, before completing the sweep with a 7-5 win in the nightcap.
Kostich tied junior
Christa McGahuey with her team leading eighth home run of the season in the fourth inning of the first game to trim Toledo's lead to 3-1. But that was as close as the score would get as the Rockets responded with three runs in the fifth inning, before adding on two more in the top of the seventh.
Junior
Katy Severson hit her third long ball of the season in the fifth inning, while Astorga finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a double in the loss.
In the nightcap, Toledo took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning before a single up the middle from Astorga scored Kostich to trim the lead to 3-1. The Rockets would score four more runs in the top of the fifth to build a 7-1 lead, before the Titans answered back with three runs, including an RBI double from senior
Kat Hoffman to make the score 7-4.
Detroit would add on another run in the sixth inning off an RBI single from freshman
Dayton Yingling to make the score 7-5, but Toledo would hold on by putting down the Titans in order in the seventh inning to complete the sweep.
Astorga finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, an RBI and one run scored, while Hoffman finished 3-for-8 with an RBI double and one run scored.
The Titans (3-35) will conclude their non-conference homestand against MAC schools with a single game against Buffalo on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Buysse Ballpark.
