McGahuey Leads Titans Past Buffalo 6-4

DETROIT (4/16/2015) – Junior pitcher Christa McGahuey scattered two hits over five innings as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team concluded its non-conference homestand with a 6-4 win over Buffalo on Thursday at Buysse Ballpark.

The Titans (4-35) built a 6-1 lead through the first five innings, before the Bulls (8-30) scored three runs in the sixth inning to make the final 6-4.

McGahuey started in the circle for Detroit and scattered two hits in 5.2 innings with one earned and two strikeouts.

Buffalo scored early as Alexis Curtiss hit the first pitch of the game over the left field fence to take a 1-0 lead. Detroit then responded with one run in the bottom of the first, before scoring two more in the second, including a home run from Jennifer Cottle – her third of the season – to put the Titans up 3-1.

Detroit then took advantage of three Bulls errors in the fifth inning to score three runs to build a 6-1 lead, before Buffalo answered back with three runs in the sixth inning, including a 2-run homer from Savanna Norico to trim the lead to 6-4.

After pitching the first four innings McGahuey re-entered the circle in the sixth inning to record the final two outs, before holding the Bulls hitless in the seventh to secure the win.

Detroit will head south to face Horizon League foe Wright State for a three game weekend series. The first game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
