DAYTON, Ohio (4/17/2015) – Senior
Kayla Kostich hit her team leading ninth home run of the season as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team recorded its first Horizon League win of the season with a 7-3 topping of Wright State on Friday at the WSU Softball Complex. The win marks the second-straight for Detroit (5-35, 1-9 HL) and first at Wright State since 2006.
Kostich finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI, while her classmate
Kat Hoffman finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Kostich's solo home run in the fifth inning tied the game at three, while Hoffman's two out RBI single in the sixth inning extended the Titans four run rally to give Detroit a 6-3 lead. Freshman
Alex Astorga would follow Hoffman in the sixth inning with an RBI double to make the score 7-3. Both Astorga and her classmate
Savanna Ferstle finished the day 2-for-4.
Junior
Christa McGahuey started in the circle for Detroit and pitched until the fourth inning giving up three runs on two hits, before handing over the ball to freshman
Hannah Leppek, who kept the Raiders scoreless over the next two innings. Leppek then started the seventh inning and recorded the first out, before McGahuey re-entered to record the final two outs to seal the win.
Wright State (13-26, 8-4 HL) scored one run in the bottom of the first, before an RBI single to right field from Kostich tied the score 1-1 in the third inning. The Titans then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, before the Raiders responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead 3-2.
Kostich would tie the score at three with her ninth home run of the season in the fifth inning, before the Titans erupted with four runs in the sixth.
Detroit will conclude its weekend series with Wright State on Saturday with doubleheader at WSU Softball Field. The first game is scheduled for noon, followed by the second contest at 2 p.m. Both games can be seen live on ESPN3.
