LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (4/18/2015) -- Sophomore
Brad Harris's strike with 33 seconds left was the golden goal as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team shocked the Siena Saints, 14-13, on the road on Saturday. Detroit erased a number of deficits on the day, including 13-10 to start the fourth and a 5-0 run by Siena to begin the contest.
The win moved Detroit to 7-5 on the year and 3-2 in the MAAC. The seventh victory also set a new school record for the Titans as they had posted six wins three times. It also assured the red, white and blue of its first non-losing season in the program's seven-year history.
It was the third-straight game that Detroit has pitched a shutout in the final period outscoring Marist (1-0), Monmouth (5-0) and now Siena (4-0). Detroit wasn't able to get the equalizer at Marist, but the Titans came back from an 8-4 score last week to down Monmouth, 9-8, and today used a 4-0 run in the fourth to beat Siena.
Senior
Scott Drummond led the offense with a career-high four goals for his third hat trick of the season and the sixth of his career. Freshman
Mark Anstead tallied five points on two goals and three assists and senior
Shayne Adams and Harris posted two markers apiece.
Sophomore
Jason Weber made 10 saves and senior
Chris Shevins recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior
Damien Hicks was 13-of-21 in faceoffs with three ground balls and senior
Brandon Beauregard tied his career-best with five GB's.
After seeing Siena (5-7, 2-3 MAAC) start the game with five-straight goals, Detroit battled back twice to get within one, but was down 13-10 heading into the fourth.
Sophomore
Marcus Butters started the comeback effort as he took a pass from sophomore
Kyle Beauregard, and on his first collegiate shot, he was able to beat the goalie with 12:38 on the clock. Neither team would score for the next nine minutes until junior
Mike Spuller set up Drummond's goal with 3:43 on the clock. Weber then came up with a big save and the next time down the field,
Brandon Beauregard found Drummond, who rang up his career-high fourth score to knot the game at 13-13 with 2:19 remaining.
Detroit was able to get the ball back and after a timeout, Harris was able to fire in the game winner with 33 ticks on the clock, his first-ever multi-goal game, and the Titans would hold on for the victory.
Detroit and Siena took 41 shots apiece, while the Titans won the ground ball battle, 35-32. Detroit was 17-of-19 in the clearing game and made Siena pay for its penalties scoring on 4-of-6 power play opportunities.
On their Senior Day, the Saints had all the energy and momentum early on pouring in five goals in the first nine minutes of play. Drummond ended that with 5:09 on the clock. The goal started a 3-0 spurt by the Titans with junior
Andy Hebden and freshman
Jeff Fernandes finding the back of the net to make it 5-3 at the end of the first period.
Both teams traded goals in the second until the Titans made it a one-goal game, 8-7, as Harris notched his first and Anstead scored with the extra man attack with 1:32 left. Siena, though, would score one late to take a 9-7 advantage at the break and another two goals early in the third had Detroit down, 11-7.
The Titans tallied their second 3-0 run of the game – all on the man-up – to once again climb back within one. Adams located Drummond for his MAAC-leading seven man-up goal of the year at the 11:02 mark. Anstead had an unassisted goal with 5:01 showing and
Brandon Beauregard hooked up with Adams for a strike to make it an 11-10 contest with 4:27 remaining in the period. Siena would stop that with two scores for the 13-10 lead going into the fourth.
Detroit will return home for an important MAAC contest next Saturday, April 25, as the Titans host Canisius on Senior Day at 2:00 p.m. The game is part of a Titan lacrosse doubleheader as the women face Furman at 11:00 a.m., with Senior Day Festivities taking place prior to both games.
Depending on the outcome of some other conference games, the loser of the Detroit-Canisius bout might be on the outside looking in for the MAAC Championship.
Game Notes:Siena leads the all-time series, 5-3, but two of the Titan wins have been on the road as Detroit won at Siena, 13-11, in 2011 for the first road win in school history… Four of the eight Detroit-Siena lacrosse games have been decided by just one goal… It was the fourth fourth-quarter comeback in Titan history joining last week's 9-8 win against Monmouth (trailed 8-4), the 2013 MAAC Championship against Siena (down 10-9 and won in overtime, 11-10) and the 2014 contest against Mercer (down 9-8 and won 11-10)… The game is also tied for the second overall comeback in school history behind the five-goal comeback against Siena in the 2013 MAAC Championship (trailed 8-3 in the second and 9-4 in the third)… The 14 goals tied a season high with the 14 at Bellarmine earlier in the year and the 30 shots on goal were also a season high… Anstead's five points were one shy of his season high against Robert Morris… Drummond has seven goals and eight points in the last four games against Siena… Adams extended his NCAA high-consecutive scoring streak to 58-straight games with at least one point…
