CLEVELAND, Ohio (4/29/2015) – Junior
Christa McGahuey recorded her first complete game shutout of the season as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team took the first game of a doubleheader against Cleveland State 5-0 on Wednesday. CSU then bounced back to win the nightcap 6-4 at Viking Field.
Detroit (8-39, 4-13 HL) scored all five of its runs of the first game in the fourth inning, including two run double off the bat of McGahuey, to break a scoreless tie. That was all the junior would need as she held the Vikings to just two hits over seven innings to complete the shutout.
Freshman
Savanna Ferstle and junior
Jennifer Cottle both drove in runs following McGahuey's double in the fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead.
Detroit recorded 10 hits in the first game as the top of the order combined to go 8-for-14 with three runs scored and two RBI. Cottle was the only Titan to record a hit in the bottom half of the order as she finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
In the second game, Cleveland State (22-25, 7-10 HL) scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a three run homer run for Cynthia Woodard – the Horizon League leader with 23 - to break open a scoreless game.
Detroit would respond with two runs in the top fourth inning off a pair of RBI singles from senior
Kat Hoffman and freshman
Alex Astorga to trim the Vikings lead to 6-2.
The score would remain at 6-2 thanks to four scoreless innings in the circle from freshman
Dayton Yingling, to give the Titans' bats one last shot in the top of the seventh.
In the final inning Detroit was able to get two more runs off the bat of senior
Sam Henderson as her two-out single to right center with the bases loaded made the score 6-4. But the rally would come up short as Grace Schmieser went down swinging to end the game.
Astorga and Hoffman both finished the day 4-for-8 with one RBI and one run scored, while McGahuey and Cottle both finished 3-for-7 at the plate.
Detroit will conclude its regular season with a three-game weekend series at Green Bay on Friday and Saturday (May 1-2). The first game on Friday is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. ET at Phoenix Field, while the first pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday is set for 1:00 p.m.
