GREEN BAY (5/1/2015) – Seven different Titans recorded a hit, including three from freshman
Alex Astorga, as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team won its second road game of the week with a 9-8 topping at Green Bay on Friday at Phoenix Field.
Astorga finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, while
Kat Hoffman and
Savanna Ferstle both finished 2-for-3. Senior
Kayla Kostich also recorded two hits to go along with two RBI, while junior catcher
Jennifer Cottle finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Detroit (9-39, 5-13 HL) took its only lead of the game after erupting for six runs in the top the fifth inning to build a 9-5 lead.
Green Bay (16-25, 8-10 HL) would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth inning to trim the lead to 9-8, before junior
Christa McGahuey reentered the circle to put the Phoenix down in order in the seventh inning to record her second-straight win this week.
The Titans struck first in the opening inning with three hits, including an RBI single from Ferstle to take a 1-0 lead. Green Bay would respond with three runs in the bottom of the first, before adding one more in the second to build a 4-1 lead.
Detroit then answered back with two runs in the third, including an RBI single from McGahuey to make the score 4-3.
Green Bay would extend its lead to 5-3 following one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Detroit exploded with six runs in the top of the fifth inning to build a lead it would not relinquish.
The Titans recorded six runs on six hits in the fifth inning including a two run double to left center from Kostich and a two run single to left field from Cottle to help secure their fifth conference win. The five wins in Horizon League play are the most for Detroit since 2006.
McGahuey started in the circle for Detroit and threw six innings allowing five runs – three earned – while striking out three for the win.
Detroit will conclude its regular season with a doubleheader at Green Bay on Saturday, with the first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. ET at Phoenix Field.
