DETROIT (8/10/2015) -- Several newcomers saw the field for the first time in a University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer uniform as the Titans kicked off their 2015 schedule with a 3-0 exhibition victory over Rochester College at Titan Field.
The game was delayed for nearly one hour as rain and lightning postponed the scheduled 4 p.m. start time. Once the game did get going, Detroit controlled play, allowing just one shot on goal in the 90 minutes and pressuring the visitors throughout.
The Titans got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute as sophomore
Suzie Redick (Northville, Mich. / Northville) scored off a cross from senior
Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower). Lotito's pass came from the right side into the box and Redick beat the defense to the ball and chipped a shot over the goalkeeper's head, off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Detroit scored two goals in the second half. Senior
Jennifer Borawski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) knocked home a rebound in the 68th minute and sophomore
Paige Roberts (Redford, Mich. / Mercy) added a goal just nine minutes later capitalizing on a pass from freshman
Elizabeth Gonser (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central).
Senior goalkeeper
Martha Dunbar (Burlington, Ont. / Nelson) started the game and played the first 45 minutes for the Titans. Freshman keeper
Sarah Hirschmann (Fraser, Mich. / Warren Regina) played the entire second half, making one save in net.
The Titans held the shot advantage for the game, 14-1.
Detroit plays its second exhibition game on Sunday, hosting Michigan State for a 1 p.m. match at Titan Field. On Saturday, the women's soccer program will host its annual alumni game at Titan Field, also set for a 1 p.m. start.
