DETROIT (1/31/2016) -- A 21-5 run was just what the Titans needed as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team erased a double-digit deficit to upend the Wright State Raiders on Sunday, 75-68, at Calihan Hall.
Senior
Anton Wilson led the comeback with 18 points – 15 in the second half - tying his season high with five 3-pointers. Sophomore
Jaleel Hogan had 13 points and two blocks and freshman
Josh McFolley registered 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Detroit (10-11, 4-6 HL) was down by 11 in the first half and 10 late in the first period before going on a 21-5 run to seize the lead.
Wright State (13-10, 7-3 HL) was up by 10, 35-25, with 2:09 left in the first when McFolley nailed a three. On the next possession, he was fouled and split a pair at the line sending UDM to the locker room down just 35-29 in a period that saw WSU shoot 56.0 percent (14-of-25).
The Raiders got the first two points of the second half as JT Yoho – who ended the game with a career-high 31 – had a basket, but from there, the Titan offense got going. Hogan got inside for two and then back-to-back triples from Wilson tied it up at 37-37 at the 16:26 mark.
Detroit took the lead on a four-point play from Wilson as he was fouled hitting a three and his free throw put the Titans in front, 41-40, with 13:59 left. Williams then had a basket and Wilson sank another trifecta for a 46-40 advantage with 12:51 on the clock.
That was all part of a 21-5 spurt over nine minutes of play that saw the Titans go 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three, all while holding Wright State to 2-of-9 shooting with five turnovers.
The Raiders would come back to tie the game at 49-49 at the 9:23 mark, but Detroit responded with a 9-2 run for its largest lead of the game, 60-53 with 5:44 left. Wright State wouldn't go away and went on an 11-3 run of its own to briefly take the lead, 64-63, with 2:34 remaining, but the Titans let that get to them.
The red, white and blue would connect on 7-of-8 free throws in the next minute of play to take a 70-64 advantage with just over a minute left. Sophomore
Paris Bass then had a dunk with under a minute to go, and free throws down the stretch sealed the victory.
Junior
Jarod Williams ended with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior
Chris Jenkins had five points, a team-high five rebounds and tied his career high with four steals, while redshirt freshman
Aaron Foster-Smith ended with five points and two caroms.
UDM shot 47.6 percent for the game, but 60.0 percent (12-of-20) in the second half, which included 4-of-8 from three - all from Wilson.
Detroit trailed the entire first half Wright State started the game with eight-straight points. The Raiders would eventually lead by as many as 11, 24-13, with 9:36 left in the half as they were 8-of-10 from the field at that point.
Detroit trimmed the margin to just four, 26-22, with 6:39 remaining, but Wright State stopped that charge and pushed it back to a 10-point game, 35-25.
The Titans will now get ready for a busy month of February that will see them on the road for six of the final eight games of the regular season, starting with a game at Cleveland State on Thursday.
