DETROIT (10/12/2016) -- Six Titan men's fencers competed this past weekend in the October North American Cup, which was held at the nearby Cobo Center in downtown Detroit from Oct. 7-10. It was the first action of the collegiate fencing season for the University of Detroit Mercy fencing programs.
Freshman
Wiley Dressell (Royal Oak, Mich.), the son of Titan head coach
Todd Dressell, placed 13th out of 115 fencers in the Division II Men's Sabre competition, which was the final event of the October NAC on Monday. Dressell went 5-1 in pool play on Monday and then won his first three bouts in the direct elimination bracket.
He was seeded No. 17 after pool play and won his first two bouts by 15-2 and 15-10 margins. Facing the No. 16 seed Blake Bradford, Dressell won in a thrilling 15-14 match before falling to top-seeded Alec Mulvaney in the Round of 16.
Senior captain
Austin Carlisle (Troy, Mich.) also fenced in the Divison II competition Monday, placing 42nd overall. He went 4-2 in pool play with a +10 indicator (25 touches scored, 15 touches received). He earned the No. 27 seed and won his first direct elimination bout, 15-7, over Josh Herring before falling 15-10 to Nathan Brown in the Round of 64.
Freshman
Tahj Butler (Harrisburg, N.C.) placed in the top 200 out of 274 in the Division I Men's Epee event on Saturday. Butler went 2-3 in pool play and narrowly was on the wrong side of a 15-14 bout with higher-seeded Ryan Hrapsky. Butler finished 198th overall. Senior teammate
Aaron Dittel (Berkley, Mich.) also fenced in the epee, placing 245th after going 1-5 in pool play.
Also on Saturday, sophomore
Algird Szumlas (Glendora, Calif.) finished in 181st in the Division I Men's Foil event. He went 2-4 in pool play. On Sunday, sophomore
Josh Blackburn (West Bloomfield, Mich.) was 159th in the Division II Men's Foil competition. He earned a 1-5 mark in pool play.
The Titans are set to compete next month at the November North American Cup, being held from Nov. 11-14 in Milwaukee, Wis.
