KETTERING, Ohio (10/18/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended the fall season by tying for fifth at the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Tuesday.
The Titans lowered their first-round output to shoot a 302 on the final 18 for a 608 (306-302) scorecard at the Par 71, 7,100-yard NCR Country Club's South Course in Kettering, Ohio.
Senior
Kyle Gaines led Detroit Mercy tallying a 151 (75-76) to tie for 21st place. Senior
Spencer Lendzion tied for 29th with a 152 (77-75), while freshman
Scott Sparks had the best round in the event for the Titans firing a 3-over 74 and ending 38th overall with a 153 (79-74).
The event concluded the fall season as the red, white and blue will enter its winter training to get ready for the 2017 spring campaign.Â
Here is a recap of the action at Dayton:
- The Titans tied for fifth with Fort Wayne and Miami (Ohio) and were just four shots away from third place.Â
- Kyle Gaines topped the team with 20 pars and tied for the team lead sinking five birdies.
- He also shared the team high and was tied for fourth in the field with a -2, 4.66 average on the course's Par 5's.
- Spencer Lendzion posted 17 pars and five birdies – including four in the second round - of his own and tied Gaines for the team lead on the Par 5's.Â
- Scott Sparks had the best round of the event for the Titans with his 3-over 74 on the final 18.
- Sparks knocked in four birdies on Tuesday and ended with five overall in the tournament.Â

"Scotty showed some poise in rebounding from yesterday and Kyle grinded out two good scores without his best stuff."
"It was a solid round from the guys today to end the event. We played in very firm windy conditions. A top-five finish was a good way to end our fall where we weren't at our best."
