KANSAS CITY, Mo. (10/6/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned the third-highest GPA among Division I teams last year and the Titan women's soccer squad also earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award with the organization announcing the team honors on Thursday.
The University of Detroit Mercy was one of 222 schools across the country to have both its men's and women's soccer team honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award, given to a squad for holding a team GPA of 3.0 or better during the 2015-16 school year.
The Titan men's soccer team posted a 3.45 team GPA for the 2015-16 school year, which only ranked behind Denver and Notre Dame among NCAA Division I schools. Across all three divisions and the NAIA, the Titans were one of 25 teams with a 3.45 GPA or better.
The Titan women's soccer squad posted a 3.50 GPA and earned the team academic honor for the fourth time in the past six years. In 2014-15, women's soccer sported a 3.70 GPA, which was the fourth-highest mark in the nation among all 859 men's and women's teams total, across all NCAA divisions.
Both teams were at or near the top among Horizon League schools with the men's squad ranking first and the women's team earning the third-best mark, only behind Cleveland State (3.67) and Valparaiso (3.53).
To qualify for the award, collegiate men's and women's soccer teams must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA and then dividing by the number of players.
Nearly 900 teams were honored across the country -- 578 women's soccer teams and 314 men's soccer squads for a total of 892.
