MILWAUKEE, Wis. (11/15/2016) -- Titan freshmen
Tahj Butler and
Wiley Dressell each competed at the 2016 November North American Cup this past weekend as the University of Detroit Mercy men's fencing team continues to prepare for the upcoming 2016-17 dual season.
Butler fenced in the Junior Men's Epee competition on Sunday, Nov. 13 and finished 82nd out of 260 competitors in the event. Butler was impressive during pool play, earning a record of 5-1 overall, finishing with 26 touches scored against 19 touches received. He earned a No. 48 seed entering the direct elimination draw. Butler fell in the Table of 128 by a 15-7 margin.
Dressell competed in the Junior Men's Sabre event on Monday, finishing 89th out of 210 fencers overall. Dressell went 4-2 during pool play and recorded a 22-22 touches scored against touches received indicator. In the direct elimination bracket, he was seeded 81st and dropped his first bout by a 15-12 margin to Ben Scholl of Oregon.
The Titans are set to compete at the December North American Cup from Dec. 2-4 in Columbus, Ohio. Detroit Mercy opens up as full teams at the Istvan Danosi Open on Sunday, Dec. 11 in Detroit at Wayne State University.
