DETROIT (2/11/2016) -- Sophomore
Paris Bass recorded a double-double and was one of four Titans in double figures, but that was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was upended by Green Bay, 86-85, on Thursday night at Calihan Hall.
Bass tallied his seventh career double-double and third this season with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore
Jaleel Hogan posted 18 points and 10 rebounds and senior
Carlton Brundidge added 18 points and tied his season high with seven caroms.
Detroit (12-12, 6-7 HL) was down by nine, 83-74, with 3:59 left when it rallied to make it a one-possession game. The Titans started chipping away and a basket by Brundidge cut it to 84-80 with 1:56 remaining. The next time down the court, Brundidge was fouled and hit two free throws and Detroit trailed by two, 84-82, with 1:30 left.
The Titans then forced a miss from Green Bay (15-10, 7-5 HL) and got the ball back, but a turnover ended the Titan possession, and the Phoenix hit two free throws to seal it.
Senior
Anton Wilson connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, four assists and tied his season-high with four steals. Junior
Chris Jenkins tallied nine points and three boards and freshman
Josh McFolley handed out three assists.
Detroit was down by 10 in the second half, 54-44, when Wilson knocked in a trey and Brundidge and Hogan added baskets to get UDM within three, 54-51. Green Bay was able to stifle the charge though and raise its lead to nine on a few occasions.
The Titans next charge came with back-to-back baskets by Hogan and Bass and Detroit was behind by just four, 70-66. The Phoenix stopped that and led by nine again, 77-68, with 6:24 remaining when Wilson nailed back-to-back treys to pull the team within three, 77-74, at the 5:17 mark, but the Phoenix increased that to nine again at 83-74.
Detroit shot 41.8 percent (33-of-79) for the game with 14 assists. UDM also came away with 10 steals.
The action was back and forth early on, but Green Bay would open up a six-point lead a couple of times, the latest at 19-13 at the 12:56. That is when Brundidge personally tied the game with three-straight baskets. After a free throw from the Phoenix, Wilson put the Titans ahead, 22-20, by sinking a long trifecta with 10:11 left.
The teams then traded the lead a few more times after that until the Phoenix opened an eight-point advantage, 44-36, with 1:26 on the clock and the Titans went into the locker room down by six, 46-40.
Bass had 12 points and nine boards at the half, while Hogan and Brundidge netted 10 apiece. Both teams also shot over 41.0 percent from the field.
Detroit will now get ready for Homecoming as the red, white and blue take on Milwaukee on Saturday in a Titan doubleheader. The women will begin things against Valparaiso at Noon with the men's game at 3 p.m. It is also senior day as Brundidge and Wilson will be honored before tip-off.
