COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/13/2016) -- Senior
Andy Hebden tallied his first career hat trick and junior
Jason Weber made 15 saves, but it was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was downed by No. 11/12 Ohio State, 16-5, in its season opener on Saturday afternoon. The game was played indoors at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Hebden came into the game with 13 career goals, but posted three goals by the third period. Junior
Kyle Beauregard had a goal and an assist and sophomore
Mark Anstead handed out two assists with one score.
The Titans (0-1) got on the board first taking advantage of an Ohio State (2-0) penalty as Anstead fed Hebden for the first goal of 2016 just 30 seconds into the contest.
The Buckeyes scored four-straight after that, but Detroit came back to pull within one, 4-3, as Beauregard found the back of the net in the second and then Hebden beat the keeper with 5:55 left in the period.
Hebden then put in his third just a couple of minutes later on another man-up opportunity, while Anstead ripped in his first goal of the season in the fourth.
Freshman
Bo Pickens ended the game with a team-high three caused turnovers, while Hebden, Weber and sophomore
Pat Masterson picked up a team-best four ground balls. The four GB's were a career-high for Hebden.
The Titans will be in action next Saturday, Feb. 20, as the red, white and blue visit Mercer in a game scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
